Right, i'm ready to set off on my mission to try Linux, i'm looking forward to it a lot more now, I was thinking i'd have to dual-boot Windows and Linux for certain programs like flash and Photoshop but after researching a little I found a program called WineX, nice program although I still don't know much about it but it allows you to run Windows products straight off Linux.
That and the fact that i've got a copy of openoffice.org
woooo, even though i'll probably use MS Office for database's and misc word processing. I can also run some games off it too! yipee.

Anyway, I was pondering and other than making websites on my PC I like to listen to music and watch movies but i'm not sure of any download programs or p2p programs like KaZaA on Linux, so I was hoping someone might have an idea :)
I'd run KaZaA but i'd like to use as many Linux products as possible.

WINE's great, it will launch most Windows apps - Even WinMX and some say KaZaA.

can't you use Lnx4win to run your MS apps? I have to say though, you two arn't very encouraging :) I don't intend on leaving Windows as it's got my favourite programs and of course games which i won't be able to run on my PC... 233Mhz :) but I was hoping i'd be able to run most of them in WineX I don't really want to have to install Windows on it too although i'll probably have to then either dual boot it.

Anyway, thanks for all your help, muwahaha, it's been quite intresting reading your argument too, nice ;)

I doubt i'll go into #Leiden to ask for any (more) help, but theres no doubt i'll need some/loads. :)

True, it's very annoying, although you can just move the font to the right directory and run xset fp rehash. But yes, I agaree. Changes for XF5? I hope so.

I had my System up for 39 days here before my modem screwed over and wouldn't hang up. Sure, Linux is excessively crap in some places (eg. /dev) but once you get it working it doesn't randomly break. The only thing that ever has is xft, and at this point I must admit cleartype is a major pull towards XP for me. Xft'll work on Rar though.

eh.. you still think your sound card decodes your mp3s. I use winamp which uses the 3dnow! floating point instruction set in my cpu to decode mp3s in sub-1% cpu.. but I don't care how much cpu it's using as long as it doesn't slow down XP, and the music doesn't skip. And it doesn't. Another thing about XP is that I can burn a cd with extremely minimal effect on the computer's usability, whereas Linux's ugly ide-scsi hack doesn't even support DMA on my cd drive. That isn't going to change until 2.6 at best.

Gimp that works properly or.. Photoshop. Rah. Linux doesn't even support my fecking graphics tablet, and I use it a /lot/.

> giFT,
You can compile giFT for windows.. or I can use cygwin's XFree86 port (or vnc) to log into io and run it from there.. if I wanted to. I have Kazaa. I don't know how you live without it.

> gFTP,
Ha. gFTP is a joke. Last time I used it it wouldn't stop crashing. I'm sure that's changed. I use either explorer or lftp for ftp. Don't diss explorer's ftp support. IE6 does it right. Doesn't support changing permissions? Try "Properties".

Oh yeah.. feh. Built on the E graphics libraries I believe. Supports arbitrary rotation with a modifier key and one of the mouse axis. Lovely. I'll use explorer to view images and photoshop to edit them, thanks. And the explorer-resize thing that's so annoying.. you can turn it off :)

Explorer replacements (which is nautilus). It's just so powerful.

Explorer is far superior to any other file management program I know of bar perhaps bash. But I have both.

Only cygwin doesn't emulate linux binaries. And I could use bash if I wanted to, but I don't need to. Because I use explorer, and I'm happy with that.

I know, and that's why I like it ;)

I'm glad you're happy with Linux on the desktop and that you've gained some Unix clue from me.

It's just that after 4 years of linux on the desktop there's only so much [expletive] you can take :)

Yeah, each to his own. I couldn't live without a Windows box in the house, because I need stuff like Studio MX, CS that works properly and Photoshop, but I don't need it often enough to warrant using Windows instead of Linux. Linux just holds so much stuff that is better for me: galeon, xchat that looks nice, unison, gkrellm, quanta, sub-3% MP3s, gimp that works properly, giFT, gftp, plus all the little things like the general UI, its niceness, stuff that Windows *won't* do, feh, etc.

Plus there's the terminal, it's really amazingly good, not only as an Explorer replacements (which is nautilus). It's just so powerful. Don't go on to me about cygwin, because I can just counteract with wine, and it's just not the same.

I only use Windows for a handful of things: CS, Macromedia, not really even Photoshop that much, I can do everything in the GIMP. I've got no problem with using Windows (apart from the few seconds it takes to boot, RAR!) but it's just *not* Linux.

Yeah, KDE is talked about more because magazines are for stupid people, and KDE is for stupid people, so they kinda go together. KDE just takes the worst bits of Windows and combines it with Linux, which produces something really really misleading and poor.

And I would recommend GNOME, because unless you haven't noticed, Windows' interface is really annoying and it's *windows*. PLus, GNOME is generally better, looks nice, goes faster, etc. Use GNOME, bin KDE.

I'm using Windows XP now after about 5 years of using Linux at least partially on the desktop.

Linux is an excellent replacement for Windows 9x or, to an extent, Windows 2000. But for everything I do with computers.. I'd rather be using XP right now.

People who use an operating system because they think they should annoy me. Unfortunately they seem to be a large proportion of Linux users.

Someone once said.. Linux users are people who hate Windows and BSD users are people who love UNIX. Despite being a blatant generalisation, it's often quite true.

I still believe that Linux has its place. I'm using it on three out of five computers in my presence and would never use anything else as a server or gateway. But as my main desktop machine it pales in comparison to XP. In my opinion anyway :)

Good luck getting one of your commercial distributions working.. it should be fun and interesting at least. One of the coolest things about Linux is the surrounding community of really cool helpful people. As far as distributions are concerned my personal preference is Debian Unstable (very different from "Potato" which is much older -- but Woody is stable now, and ISOs will be coming out soon. I digress.), but that's not really a viable choice for a first time user who's used to Windows.

I use Debian on the router/gateway and server boxen in the loft, and OpenBSD on the development box to my left. Mainly for vim over NFS to io ;)

OpenBSD is another very nice distro. It has the nicest installation routine I've ever seen. But it requires clue. Go get some clue :)
