Most of you know me as the git with lots of games. With two versions of the ZX Spectrum, a SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, PC, Dreamcast, PS2 and GameCube, surely I should be happy with what I've got? Well, of course I enjoy playing the majority of games I've got for each system, but it doesn't stop me wanting to play more. I want to play the new Zelda game, I want to blow up more dinosaurs in Turok Evolution, I even want to enjoy Fox's latest adventure in Dinosaur Planet!

There is one problem though. I, like many others in their teenage years, don't currently have a job. I am still in full time education and finding a part time job which doesn't involve frying burgers is very difficult. Sure, I get a small amount of 'pocket money' for helping round the house, but with new games priced between £35 and £40, it's still difficult to get all the games I want.

I do, however, have a way of making life a little easier in this situation. I make up a wishlist of games I want in my mind, then prioritise them by which ones I want the most and by the date they're released. Here's an example:

I want these games for the GameCube: Zelda, Mario Sunshine, Turok Evolution, Starfox Adventures, Resident Evil, Donkey Kong Racing. (There are others, but these'll do for the example.

If I re-arrange them into a list to show them in the order I most want them, the highest being the one I want most, then the list looks like this:

Zelda
Starfox Adventures
Turok Evolution
Mario Sunshine
Donkey Kong Racing
Resident Evil

However, these games wont be coming out in this order, so to make sure I get each game as soon as possible, whilst keeping priority where possible, the list looks like this:

Starfox Adventures
Turok Evolution
Mario Sunshine
Zelda
Resident Evil
Donkey Kong Racing

Chances are, I wont be getting these games in this order, and there maybe one or two I'll never get, but atleast now I've got a chance to try and raise some cash for each game with some time between each release. Sure, Starfox and Turok Evolution will be released quite close to each other, but by the time I've played the one to death, I should have enough money for the other.

Ofcourse, my list is a lot bigger, and spans over many other consoles including the Game Boy Advance, PC and there are still some Dreamcast titles I want to buy. Atleast fifty-percent of the games I want, I probably wont buy, and chances are I'll make an impulse buy or two if I see any games I used to have at the top of my mental list going cheap or even some that just looked good in the shops.

Hopefully, I will be able to get all the games I want, but the odds of that happening aren't really in my favour. I'm a seventeen-year-old without a job, who longs to be able to go out with my friends who have got the money to, who doesn't just want to spend money on games. But gaming is my first love, and again, I prioritise games above other pleasures in life. I still go out when I can, but I prefer to play games than to get drunk, or to just 'hang about' doing nothing particularly fun.

So that's how I get the majority of games I want. It helps having a brother with a like for games, and my parents asking me what I want for birthdays and Christmas, but there are still many games I've missed in the past.

How do you get the games you want when you're stuck for cash?

Mostly, single men who wished they had something dear to them but don't, and instead go around ordering people about for no reason and being all of the above.

I can't afford to buy every new release I want, partly because of money and partly because I don't want to get obsessed and buy hundreds of games anyway. And with areound £20 a week, even if I DID want every new release, it's just not possible.

And I can't work "properly" yet as I don't have an NI card, so my wages will not be flying high anytime soon.

My advice? Be real happy with what you got. Try swapping games with mates who have games you don't. Rent out games, go preowned. And complete all the games you have, or at least, as much as possible.

And obviously, try for GAD too. :D

I once did have a job....I worked in Marks & Spencers in Cardiff...

Ok, I managed to save up for this PC I'm using right now, but for half the time I worked there, I hated it. I liked the interraction with customers....I hated the bitchy, moody, bossy, selfish, ignorent, arrogant supervisor though...

I never had more than 5 N64 games before I found out about Gameaday.co.uk late last year and got a job about 3 months ago.
And now my collection spans at an amazing 19!!
After a number of pre-owned purchases and GAD wins. :)

You need to get a job Edgy, but don't just work in Tesco's stacking shelves or something like everyone else. Find something else for yourself, and then you can be a happy 17 year old like me with money to spend! :)

I do that sometimes, but I get sweets mainly and use the rest for my own stuff, but my mum doesn't mind.

I don't have a problem.
I work one hour a week, and get paid £15 for it :D
£5 from my Grandparents every week
£10 a fortnight from my other Grandparents
£20 a month from my parents.

Total = £120 a month :D

I can afford to buy a new game every two weeks :)

Plus if you take into account the lunch money I get for school £1.70 a day. I don't eat lunch you see, but my parents don't know that. So I keep the pound coin from each day making another £5 a week, so that now £140 a month. I chuck the 70 pence and any other lose change I have in my bottom desk draw, about a month ago my mother counted up all the change I had in there, it came to £56 :) I reckon I have at least £30 in losose change again by now.

So...yeah..I'm sort of rich I guess :)

When I have no money and want a game I come on SR and write some rubbish in a (usually very bad) attempt to win a GAD... ;-)

Nah, I only do that when I have nothing better to do... But I have no cash at the moment as I spent it all buying a Cube, but luckily just before I got the Cube I won three GADs in the space of about 2 months which came in extremely handy! Well, you could always sell that crappy ol' PS2... ;-)

You said it Edgy! ;)

Anyways, I am also 14, and I don't really have a job as such (I walk the dogs about 25 times a week and get paid) so my weekly income is about £10-15 (if I wash the cars and do other stuff too). So, make that into £40-60 a month. That's enough for a game, which is very nice indeed. The problem is though, there are many games coming out in the near future, and I can't make enough money to buy them all, so I too make a list of games that I think I will enjoy playing. I normally end up spending nothing one month, and then getting a couple of games the next, or a few CD's. What happens though if there are about 8 games that I would like to own and I can't get them all? Easy. Write a list down in order of which ones you would most prefer and get them in that order.

Works a treat for me!

Like you I makes lists and take a look at what I want most, and like you I buy about 50% percent of the games I want aswell. I am 14 and the only jobs I can get at my age are at pubs, chip shops or small newsagents and I only have dank pubs near me. So I rely on pocket money and making a game last longer.
