A strange race to follow strange qualifying.
Mark Webber has won the Australian Grand Prix after a stunning display in the rain. It was raining lightly at the start of the race but got heavier during the race. This caught out 3 drivers (Sato, Villeneuve and Fisichella) who all needed to change tyres after 4 laps.
Yoong, the polesitter, lost the lead to Sato at the first corner and also lost 2nd place to teammate Webber. Webber took advantage of the tyre dilemma on Sato's Jordan and never looked back.
De La Rosa's dismal weekend ended on lap 13 with transmission failure. Salo was hit by Heidfeld on lap and dropped to last, then had a spin on lap 7 and went out with electrical failure on lap 33. Coulthard hit Montoya and they both spun into the gravel, both of them losing places. The rivalry continues late on in the race with Montoya nudging Coulthard out of the way for 17th. McNish nudges Massa leading to McNish spinning. Frentzen hits Ralf Schumacher and they both spin losing 10 places each. Villeneuve hit Fisichella and spun. Massa makes a mistake with 2 laps left and loses 2 places.
Everyone stopped once for fuel and tyres which was very logical because of the wet conditions. Ralf Schumacher needed a late stop to mend a damaged wing.
Mark Webber stayed out of trouble and won easily. Bernoldi drove a great race and had to overtake Yoong for 2nd place. Drive of the day was Jenson Button, who started 8th and found himself 3rd after the pit stops. Yoong really struggled with the conditions and ended 4th. Raikkonen and Trulli rounded out the top 6.
