5 becomes 3 as Sato wins in America

Sato has won the American Grand Prix with a great drive and great pit work. He was third with the pit stops to come and managed to come out in first after the stops and never looked back.

The championship race lost 2 more contenders. Ralf Schumacher failed to win and finished 5th meaning he can't win the title. Montoya suffered the ultimate heartbreak. He was comfortably in the points when a puncture damaged his car and was forced to retire. He cannot win the title now.

Irvine was the first to retire with a water leak on lap 15. Montoya retired with a puncture on lap 31. BAR had an awful race. Villeneuve retired on lap 56 with an engine problem. Panis retired two laps later with a brake problem.

Sato took his second win of the season with a stunning drive. Frentzen took 2nd place to keep his championship challenge going. Fisichella was unlucky not to win and had to settle with 3rd. Raikkonen, Ralf Schumacher and Coulthard rounded out the top 6.

Full race results:

1st Sato (Bizarre Cabbage) 1h28m54.834s

The final round in Japan will co-incide with the real Japanese Grand Prix and will be this weekend. Only 10 points are now available in the drivers championship and 16 points available in the constructors championship.

Only 2 teams can win the constructors championship.

Arrows must come first and second to win the constructors championship and BAR must fail to score points.
BAR just need one point to win the constructors championship.

Only 3 drivers can win the drivers championship.

At the moment, all 3 drivers have won 2 races. Panis and Villeneuve have finished 2nd twice but Frentzen has finished 2nd 3 times. Frentzen also has a third place.

Villeneuve must win the last race and Frentzen and Panis must fail to score to win the championship.

Panis must outscore Frentzen to win the championship.

Frentzen can win the championship without scoring a point. To guarantee that Frentzen wins the championship, he should finish ahead of Panis and Villeneuve.

Frentzen is in the best position. Who will be the champion?

Yes! 2nd place and Panis is 18th. If I win this race then it will be exciting to see the very last race.

Great stuff, Grandprix! Nice to see you getting the Championship back together!

I've not been doing too well as Bernoldi recently - lots of bad positions on the grid and race finishes.

Still, not to worry, Bernoldi getting 18 points in a tournament is an achievement I'm proud of. :-)

Frentzen and Montoya in prime position in America

Frentzen's title challenge took a major step forward with pole position for the American Grand Prix. Montoya's push for the title also got a shot in the arm with second on the grid. It was a very close session with every car within 4 tenths of pole.

The battle for the title is hotting up. Frentzen, 6 points behind Panis, took pole and Montoya, 11 points behind, took second. Ralf Schumacher has it all to do. He must win this race to keep his challenge alive. He only managed 8th but has a chance. It was disaster for BAR as Villeneuve, 10 points behind Panis, managed 16th and the championship leader Panis could only manage 18th.

Full qualifying results:

1st Frentzen (KR) 1m11.677s
2nd Montoya (Foreman) 1m11.694s
3rd Fisichella (MikeAll) 1m11.714s
4th Raikkonen (Figo) 1m11.722s

Minardi dominant in wet as Montoya edges closer

Mark Webber and Alex Yoong finished first and second respectively to give Minardi a 1-2 in a wet Italian Grand Prix. It was all too easy. The only competition Webber had was his teammate.

In the battle for the championship, Montoya was the only one of the top 5 to score points but could only manage 5th place and 2 points. Frentzen, Villenueve, Panis and Ralf Schumacher all failed to finish in the points.

It was a tough race with numerous drivers spinning. Trulli, Raikkonen, Massa, Barrichello, Panis, Heidfeld, Frentzen, Salo, Fisichella, Irvine, M Schumacher, Bernoldi and De La Rosa all spun at one point during the race.

Ralf Schumacher's hopes of winning the title took serious damage on lap 6 when he retired with electrical problems. Button's promising qualifying position was ruined on lap 16 with engine problems. Raikkonen's transmission failed on lap 23. Heidfeld's engine blew on lap 25. Trulli ended a dismal day when his transmission failed on lap 33.

Webber took his 2nd win of the season with a faultless drive. Yoong looked equally as faultless to take 2nd. Michael Schumacher did a solid job to finish 3rd. Salo, Montoya and Coulthard rounded out the top 6.

Full race results:

1st Webber (Ant) 1h25m03.807s
2nd Yoong (No.2) +4.025s
3rd M Schumacher (Mr. Ritze) +18.321s

8= Jaguar 23pts

Fastest Lap: Webber 1m29.564s

2 rounds to go. Only the top 5 drivers has a mathematical chance of winning the drivers title. Only the top 3 teams have a chance to win the constructors title.

Ralf Schumacher has to win the next two rounds with Panis scoring no points and no one else reaching more than 44pts
Montoya must outscore Panis in the next round to take it to the last round.
Panis can win the title at the next round with a first place or a second place depending on other results.

Webber's Minardi is the toast of Italy

Mark Webber is in pole position in the fastest race of the year. He edged out Jenson Button by 5 thousandths of a second in a very close session.

In the race for the title, Panis is in the best position of the 5 with 7th place. Ralf Schumacher is close behind in 8th but has a lot to do to win the championship. Montoya is in 9th place and Frentzen is in 10th. It was another bad session for Villeneuve as he could only 20th and has a lot to do.

Full qualifying times:

1st Webber (Ant) 1m22.143s
2nd Button (Jetster) 1m22.148s
3rd Yoong (No.2) 1m22.176s

Panis takes control in Belguim

Olivier Panis has won the Belgian Grand Prix and takes over at the top of the drivers championship. Panis got the jump on De La Rosa off the line and held off his challenge for the entire race to win.

It was a disasterous race for Jacques Villeneuve. He qualified 14th but crashed on lap 8, leading to a huge accident involving Trulli and Coulthard. Fisichella lost control on lap 9 and crashed into the barrier. Heidfeld was next out on lap 28 when he lost control and crashed. Michael Schumacher crashed out on lap 32. Bernoldi, Frentzen and Irvine all had close calls with the barrier but survived.

In the battle for the title, Panis leapt into a 6 point lead with the win. Frentzen failed to convert his decent qualifying position into points. Villeneuve crashed out on lap 8 and scored no points. Montoya finished 4th and is still in with a shout.

Panis was ran close all the way to the win. De La Rosa couldn't find a way round Panis and had to settle for second. Massa fought his way up to third and was close to taking second. Montoya, Webber and Yoong rounded out the top six.

Full race results:

1st Panis (Your Honour) 1h20m40.535s
2nd De La Rosa (Grandprix) +1.786s
