For years Acclaim basically wasted the rights to develop games under the WWF name. I remember owning 2 games for the Playstation. One of which was WWF Wrestlemania Challenge, the other WWF In Your House. Both of these were appalling games, terrible graphics, only one mode of play, about 10 characters and to top it off I completed them both within 1 hour. There were a large variety of moves, but all you had to do was bash the buttons till your opponent fainted.
I can remember WWF Challenge and Royal Rumble for the SNES, which were half decent games in their day. The graphics were excellent and both games had long term appeal.
When Warzone came out, that set the new standard of wrestling games in general to follow. Apart from the lack of Characters and a few minor glitches this was a really good example of how a WWF game should be made. Then followed Attitude, which was hyped to be THE wrestling game to own. After months of delays when I recieved this game, I have to say I was rather dissapointed. It was just a bigger, smoother version of Warzone with a few extras thrown in. OK so while the invention of the Create a Pay-Per View was the highlight, the gameplay was already a year old, and it showed. The hundreds of new moves and modes and better create a wrestler didnt make up for the slow, sluggish animation. The graphics, while nice still had a feeling to it that the clothes were painted to the body.
THQ have set a new lease of life into wrestling games. They dont apear to be afraid of trying new ideas. In the months waiting for Attitude rumors were spreading far and wide about the possibilities of ladder matches, Hell in a Cell, proper tables, casket matches and even buried alive matches. All of these modes were dismissed as it wasnt possible for the developers to make it work. But seeing the inclusion of most of these modes available for No Mercy and Smackdown 2, it just seems that effort does pay off.
After Warzone and Attitude you would think that Acclaim would try and make a fresh start with the ECW label. Yet we still get the same game engine, same character animations, same modes and nothing new. How much longer will they keep giving us the same game?
That is whats refreshing about the latest WWF titles. You can see that not only do the developers care for the way the game plays, but the graphics and presentation has been considered for the fans of wrestling.
To think what THQ has acheived on the N64 and PSX, even the back stage brawling which is equally important is an acheivment, the prospects for the next gen consoles is mouthwatering.
The future of WWF games is in very good hands, and each game that is released will continue to get better and better. Games that are fun to play, that will last for ages, matches that were never thought possible, realistic looking characters and arenas. It is a much needed breath of fresh air for future WWF video games.
this game is cool with backstage arenas new weapons cool storyline and the best lineup of wrestlers. cool places like Wrestlemania and
Backlash are new places to fight including parkings lots and locker rooms. The most incredible thing is the new ladder matches you'll love this game so i suggest you buy it
The N64 has the power over the Playstation so it will probaly play better and look a bit better but the Playstation game creater's are really pushing the the console to the max and the Playstation has the better sound quality and with the soundtrack that will be on both games makes them just that bit more realistic so that might just swing it for me.
So this might of been short and I havnt done it in detail it has been an insight to weather they are worth it. I say They are the best Wrestling games yet.
About which is better I will say when I have played both of them but on a hunch I think they will both be as good as each other.
What do you think
The is only one way forward in the future of wrestling games, and that is to make a top quality wrestling game like Wrestlemania 2000 and put it on to a PC. On a PC I hear you all say, but after listening to my reasons you will want it to happen as well. I will start with the sheer capacity of characters you could have on the game, and the constant high quality graphics that you would get from every PC game, but you would be able to do much more to make the game better than on a console. For one you could down load a load of things to make it more real to the happening at the time, because more often than not when you buy a wrestling game it gets out of date pretty quickly, but with the on line capability of a PC you could download patches which can change the characters image, their music, who they come to the ring with, who the hate, What faction they are in and what moves they can do. Another down loadable feature would be the fact that if a new character was to come to a federation then the makers of the game could create the character then upload it to the internet for us to download in stead of us having to make shody reconstructions of them in a poor create a player. This will there fore enable the game to be constantly up to date and keep us all happy. So there you have it my reasons to have wrestling games on a PC, to make them more high-tech and up to date.
