I remember it well. I arrived at the local at about 2 and proceeded to watch Holland vs Ireland. Then the most monumental game of football in my lifetime took place. Germany 1 - England 5. The "best" keeper in the World humiliated. The best striker in the world scoring three fantastic goals. A newly revitalised team showing the world their awesome power when they play at full strength.
This game showed that English football was back. Taking Arsenal's defence, Man Utd's midfield and Liverpool's awesome attack, England trounced the Germans on their own soil with a display that shocked the world.
Apart from the five goals, my favourite parts of the game were as follows:
(a) Watching it again and seeing Jancker's celebration after he scored. His calm assurance of his skill in his celebration was astounding. This was the man who was quoted as saying "When we play England, goals will flow like a volcano". Right prediction Carsten, wrong side good buddy.
(b) Steven Gerrard completely humiliating his Liverpool team mate Didi Hamman. Not only did he take the ball past him, he turned, went towards him again and beat him a second time. Brilliant stuff.
(c) In the second half, when the game was wrapped up, German supporters were leaving in their hundreds, but Sven had one last opportunity to really rub it in. So, he brought on Owen Hargreaves to basically parade him in front of the few Germans who were staying to witness the carnage. Here was a young, extremely talented lad who was eligible to play for Germany and indeed does play his football in Germany, cementing his place as an English footballer for the rest of his life.
Even the aftermath of this monumental victory was pleasing to me as a true Englishman. Didi Hamann said that Gerrard, Heskey, Owen and Carragher didn't rib him when they met up again for training. That is true professionalism and the English way.....
I apologise if this doesn't make sense but it is 1.17am!
Was down to ten men, Arsenal were having all the chances...was looking like the treble dream was over...But Vieria played in Giggs sweetly...cheers Pat :) BEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE. Never been so happy...
Everything about that season was quality. Going two-nil down in Turin in the champs league semi-final 2nd leg and to then turn it around against an Italian team (the masters of defending a lead)..pure quality. ANd for Roy Keane to lead the fight back with one of the best games of his career even though he knew he was suspended for the final. Quality.
I wish i was a bit older so I could have appreciated Maradona's goal against England in 86. Was only 3 years old when that happened...But that aint in the last ten years...
Oh well, I'll just leave it at those two for now...
