I've been playing through it again today, and it's still as fantastic as always. But I now think I know what sets it apart from any other game ever.
There are so many times in MGS, where...well, a shiver is sent down my spine...the only way I can describe it is as a 'moment.'
Moments like where Ninja is losing himself, after he's chopped Ocelot's hand off and after his fight with Snake. Moments like the deaths of Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven and especially Sniper Wolf. The latter is actually my favourite gaming moment event- with the high, sad music playing, the wolves howling and Otacon's despairing scream- I have never, ever experienced anything like that while playing a game.
You might say it's just like a movie, but it's not. It's more special than that, because I was Snake when I killed Sniper Wolf. I am the man that finally killed her, against the wishes of Otacon. Another classic moment comes straight after, when Otacon asks Snake about why they're doing 'this', and Snake replies with, "If we get out of here alive, I'll tell you." Simple, but effective.
There are many more 'moments', but they're the ones that come to mind. I'm still not totally sure why I love this game so much, but at least I'm getting there. And yes Grix, it is better than Skies Of Arcadia. {:)
Thanks for reading, Ant.
