I've been playing through it again today, and it's still as fantastic as always. But I now think I know what sets it apart from any other game ever.
There are so many times in MGS, where...well, a shiver is sent down my spine...the only way I can describe it is as a 'moment.'
Moments like where Ninja is losing himself, after he's chopped Ocelot's hand off and after his fight with Snake. Moments like the deaths of Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven and especially Sniper Wolf. The latter is actually my favourite gaming moment event- with the high, sad music playing, the wolves howling and Otacon's despairing scream- I have never, ever experienced anything like that while playing a game.
You might say it's just like a movie, but it's not. It's more special than that, because I was Snake when I killed Sniper Wolf. I am the man that finally killed her, against the wishes of Otacon. Another classic moment comes straight after, when Otacon asks Snake about why they're doing 'this', and Snake replies with, "If we get out of here alive, I'll tell you." Simple, but effective.
There are many more 'moments', but they're the ones that come to mind. I'm still not totally sure why I love this game so much, but at least I'm getting there. And yes Grix, it is better than Skies Of Arcadia. {:)
Thanks for reading, Ant.

A typical Ninty reply. Just go back to your cartoons.
:P
Ganon rises up out of his ruined castle, and light purs from him, with lightning crashing in the background, and his giant swords, and the realisation you had to fight ANOTHER fight, before the very long and rewarding ending...................that ruled.
Conker's BFD however, is a game that I can play over and over again and never skip any of the cutscenes. They are all classic moments...

You're not actually playing it though are you? you're watching a cutscene. Silly Sony's getting attached to their interactive movies. Ant if you fel that emotional about it why didn't you take your PS1 outside and bury it? and leave the real gamers to actually play their games and get fun from the GAMEPLAY and not the cut scenes.
