Give it a bit of time, it's not going to snap instantly, try reading other people's source codes and learn from them a book won't tell you everything, it's hard getting started too.
Have you learnt HTML yet?
Also you don't need to instal Apache, MySql and php onto your PC just find a host that gives them to you it's much easier, then you can sort your own out later when your a little calmer about it.

It's damn hard to get it working. I've had nearly five attempts and still can't get it to work properly myself...

They should detail things more clearer, I have enough trouble passing through the jargon.

Note that you can't just run the file as you would any other file. Stick it into the htdocs folder then open IE and type localhost/filename.php

Go to http://www.php.net/manual

They have detailed instructions on how to set PHP up with Apache. Follow them to the letter. If you have any problems come back and ask.

Word - never use software that came with books. It's always horrible about of date.

OK, we need a bit more info first. Have you installed Apache yet? What version is it? Did it install successfully? Have you installed PHP yet? What version is it? Did it install successfully? What is the file path of the php page? Have you renamed it .php?

you get my point...
