What is wrong with Nintendo?

Back in the old days of gaming Nintendo and Sega competed for market supremacy, each with their own little console. Nintendo had their NES and Sega had the Master System, each console had their main characters, NES with Mario and Master System with Sonic. Then, they both bought out their new consoles, the SNES and Mega Drive. These were 16-bit consoles, and more characters were bought out for each.
Nintendo got Zelda and Donkey Kong, Sega staying with sonic, and tails added Knuckles the Echidna.

Then there was talk of 32-bit consoles, the Sony Playstation stormed on to the market, being backed by nearly every game developer out there. Nintendo hit back with the N64, which was extremely underrated as some amazing games were produced on it. It had Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64 and Mario Kart to name a few. This had twice the power of the Playstation and showed it with some amazing graphics.

It was Sega’s turn to get back on the market, bringing out the super powerful Dreamcast. This console was way ahead of its time, but the hype of Sony’s PS2 lessened the demand for Dreamcast, Sega were going bust.
Now it is the turn of the new gen consoles: the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube.
The Playstation was first on the market, but at £300 the sales didn’t go too well until the price dropped. The same developers that backed the ps1 tagged along for the ps2, making sure there was no shortage of games. Then the awesome Xbox hit the market, again at £300, but more people bought this at launch as the power justified the price. Xbox’s power double ps2’s in every aspect, proving its place in the gaming world with games like Halo. Then came the Gamecube out last with nothing new to offer. The Gamecube’s power is even beaten by ps2 in some ways. There is no space for a hard drive and DVD playback is not available. Nintendo used to be at the top of computer gaming, now they are just a second rate contender. What has happened?

How about
Timesplitters 2
Die Hard
Medal of Honor
Jedi Knight 2
Star Wars Bounty hunter
Star Wars Ep 2: Clone Wars
Tony Hawks 4
Shaun Palmers Pro Snowboarder 2
Resident Evil
Turok 4

etc etc,all these games and plenty more will be out by the end of the year, to say the GC release list is lacking is just stupid.

but I don't

That's the thing though, just cause the game don't appeal to you doesn't mean it's got a thin line-up, there's at least 20 games on top of plenty more titles that will be released by the end of the year for the Gamecube that all appeal to me and you can gurantee reviews will give a lot of them marks of 90% and higher. I look at the X-Box line-up and I see maybe 4 games that intrest me, that doesn't mean it's got a thin line-up it just means that they don't really appeal to me.

Nothing as far as I can tell. Sales are high and the gamers relatively happy.

The media and critics were very downputting on the Playstation 2 but all 300k units were sold out on release day! It was ages before you could just walk into the shops and pick one off the shelf!

The same developers that

You couldn't be further from the truth! The X-box, in Europe and Japan had pitiful sales in comparison to the Playstation 2 and the GameCube! Sure, it did well in America, but in the UK it couldn't have done worse for a release! Sales are slowly picking up now the price has been dropped, but it's going to be a while before the majority of gamers get their hands on one.

Xbox’s power double ps2’s in every aspect,

If I could spell the noise used in Family Fortunes that plays when an incorrect answer is made, then I would.

Correction: "...proving its place in the gaming world with a game like Halo."

Then came

Nothing new in hardware, but brilliantly new games like the short 'n' sweet Luigi's Mansion based on the Ghostbusters theme, and SEGA's Super Monkey Ball which I've not seen done before.

The Gamecube’s power
> is even beaten by ps2 in some ways.

And The GameCube beats PS2 in others.

There is no space for a hard drive

Wrong! There's an expansion slot underneath the console, as there was on the NES, SNES and N64. Though I don't think they were used in the UK.

They still are, especially with help from the handheld sector.

Thing is mate, a lot of those GC titles you typed out just don't appeal to me. Zelda being Cel shaded has really put me off, that talking dinosaur among other petty things puts me off of Starfox, Eternal Darkness doesn't look all that wonderful, 1080 maybe a title I'll look into and Mario Sunshine hasn't really got me jumping for joy.

It all well saying it has a thin line up because its new, but I don't see many people giving the X-Box that thought and as far as I see, that has an excellent games line up over the next year.

I remember sony's and microsofts marketing plan, basically shout about the processing power and graphics capability as much as possible, hoping that gamers will be dazzled with the nice looking graphics.

Nintedo's plan however, wasn't to market the console, but market the games instead. So it doesn't have a Hard drive or a dvd player, big deal, its a games machine made to play games, not an entertainment centre which you can play DVDs and music CD's on.

Some people here only use their PS2 or x-box only as a DVD player, not giving a second look to the games on offer. If anyone is a second rate contendor (please note this isn't an attack on any console) then its sony and microsoft who seem to have forgotten what gamers really want in a games machine.

Just how ill-informed can one post be?

Utter, utter BS. PS2 was sold out BEFORE launch, with all of the UK's 200,000 units being sold on pre-order.

More BS. Xbox sales have been painfully slow pretty much everywhere except the US. Hence the refusal of some Japanese stores to stock the machine, and the £100 price drop after just four weeks.

Seems to me you have the PS2 and Xbox the wrong way round!

> Xbox’s power double ps2’s in every aspect,

No argument that it's more powerful, but it's nowhere near double. 30-40% at best is more like it. On paper and outstanding machine, so far let down badly by the software available.

> Then came the Gamecube out last with nothing new to offer.

Gamecube is a games machine, pure and simple, unlike both PS2 and Xbox. It's never claimed to be anything other than a games machine, and it's very good at what it does.

> What has happened?

Basically, what happened was that you made a mistake posting this, because your arguments are based on bad information.

I don't want to start boring lists, but the Gamecube has Pikmin, Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Star Fox, Zelda, Mario Sunshine, Metroid, 1080, F-Zero etc coming in the next year.

The schedules looking a bit thin at the moment because the machine has just been launched, and quite a few of the titles to be released in the next few weeks are third party rubbish like Legends of Wrestling etc.

There are other good games for Xbox out at the moment, though not as many as i'd like, and there are lots of great looking titles coming soon, so hopefully everyone will be happy.

There is a hard-drive planned, and you could always buy the 'Q'.

But hey.

Wow, totally unbiased. ;-)) How about other Nintendo must have titles though ? Cause I own a GC and I see the release schedule looking pretty thin.
