Yeah, I've had Populous for a while.

I'm still enjoying B&W. I'm on the last level now, which looks pretty good so far, except from the usual 'We want houses!'

It's based on Populous.

You might want to look into getting that instead.

Heh, it's true, they're too dependant. But at the start of each new land they actually seem to build stuff by themselves but then as the game progresses they just become plain lazy and annoying.
