Microsoft have cut thier production costs by moving Xbox production to China.

Even at £300, Microsoft were apparently still losing out £50 on the price it costs to develop an XBox. If this is true, then they are now £150 down per machine they sell - so Microsoft are only screwing themselves really

In this article Nintendo say they have sold 2.23 Million in the US.

and 1.53 Million in Japan

These figures are also only up till the end of March. So basically GameCube is beating Xbox total worldwide sales without even taking GameCube's Europeon sales into account (GameCube sold 400,000 in its first week in Europe)

Total Xbox sales worldwide seem to add up to just under 3 million.

"Basically Microsoft tried to screw europe with an unfairly high price"

With exception of the 'Cube, pretty much ALL consoles are launched at £300. The PS2 was, the PSX was, the N64 was (I think) the DC was.

And for the amount of hardware you get, £299 is a fair price, in my view.

If the xbox launched at £199 it too could have had an amazing start. I mean it sold 42,000 in the uk in the first weekend at £299. If it had launched at £199 it could have easily trebled that amount. However by the time they cut the price confidence in the xbox format had been severely knocked due to low sales so even though the price cut bought a lot of sales it doesn't compare to what a £199 launch would have achieved. Basically Microsoft tried to screw europe with an unfairly high price and all they actually did was screw themselves. The installed base of gamecubes in mainland europe is already a lot higher than xbox I believe and I'm pretty sure the uk is probably the same it depends how big the sales were after the price cut.

One things for sure the Gamecube is going to be a major format in europe much more so than the Nintendo 64.

I must admit I've bought both xbox and gamecube and love them both but only the xbox worries me with regard long term future.
