You may think these questions are best left to God Almighty and that we should just get on with things, but these are the questions that game designers must face everytime they come up with a new idea...
You see, game designers no longer have to come up with a plot, some characters and gameplay mechanics. Now their job has extended to producing a fully encompassed gaming Universe. Everything has to be though of. With the power of the consoles they develop for, nothing is impossible.
Let's take and example in the form of Jet Set Radio.
The initial concept isn't too great- you play a roller blader who has to spray grafitti around. This could be pulled off by taking the realistic stlye of Tony Hawk, adding some controls, and making a few missions. Instead it was done by creating an entirely new style of graphical world that represents the theme of the game itself. Genius.
Such ideas need not be limitted to graphics. At the simplest level, games have to be self consistent. You can follow the river of Hyrule from its source in the East right through to the great lake in the West. The gaming Universe has no holes, kinks or flaws- everything is consistent.
Why then is it that so many game designers are still making interactive films. There's nothing wrong with realistic graphics, linear gameplay and prescripted scenes, but when it comes to missing out on the point of gaming then something is going wrong. Can developers not be bothered to put some effort into turning their dreams into true gaming Universes. It's no longer acceptable to do level after level, with no thought of how one level links in with another. There has to be some sort of structure in games.
So, while you reply, let me pose a question:
If you could design the real world, what would you do?

Now that is excellent news. Shame I've sold my PS2 in frustration of waiting... how long ago did that game come out in America!

Well, if you like that, you're sure to like frequency- a very similar game created by Sony America, but with cell shaded visuals.
Unfortunately, Sony Europe don't like Sony America, and we may never see the game.

Ah yes, and end to boring edges.
So perhaps my design would be a 'back-to-basics' one, but with structures that would give us comfort with no or little effect on the world around us.
Damn, this is sounding more like a reply to a life forum topic now!
No half measures, no "realistic" compromises - just a pure and ultimate fantastical vision buzzing with extravagant colour and fabulous creatures.
....But then again, when I stand back and think about it, perhaps the natural world of Planet Earth and artificial culture of humankind is already like this.
