Gzip or GNU Tar can do this stuff in Windows: not very user friendly as I remember. Rar or zip are probably for compatability and ease of use. Or there's .ace files, which I find to be a complete pain in the bum.
Did I opt to click on the winrar.exe icon with the nice professional icon, that led to an easy to use windows interface?
Nope, I was dragged RAR files on to RAR.exe, mucking around in the registry.
A little education is a dangerous thing :-)
