Well, why not take a small lead from the people who plaster their lives over web cams, and sacrifice a bit of my privacy for... why am i writing this again?

i think you mean the will to live ; )
you had experience of this stuff? all advice is greatly appreciated...
except 'don't bother'
: )
Ah yes the wall, that painful time where it hurts so bad you have to rest to catch your breath. The inexperienced will fall to this way too early and are likely not to finish the race, best thing is to seriously pace yourself.
Oh and if there are people who are dressing up or decide to take a whistle, megaphone with them while running you will find they hit "The Wall" after about 5 miles.
Can't remember what exactly happens but you loose err something from your body and it makes it hard for you to breath/run. You need practice to keep this at bay.
No pressure though, good luck :0)
I've not been in the forums for a couple of days, as i've been trawling through the re-design of the web site for my basketball team, soon to grace the internet.
Since then, i've been talking to a girl i know about running. She runs, i run, why not run together?
Then the talk turned more sinister. She mentioned a marathon in nottingham. Maybe we could train towards that? Even if we didn't get to marathon standard, we could go in for the half marathon they hold on the same weekend instead.
Well, thinking it sounded like a nice idea, but feeling quite sure that if we'd be doing any running it'd only be the half-distance 13 miles, i expressed some agreement in principle.
Then she decided we would be doing the marathon. The whole one. And told people.
I also spoke to the guy i run with currently, after a bit of indecision, he decided he'd go for it with us. How did i get into this? Well, it all seems a bit of a blur really, but it seems that there are now two people with their hearts set on me runnning a very long way with them 5 months from now.
Okay, the initial running capabilities?
Well, in hilly mid-wales, i'm assuming stuff will be a little tougher than predominantly flat nottingham. But what kind of position am i starting this from?
Thursday night - having heard i would be doing the marathon earlier in the day, i thought it seemed like a good time to go for a long run, looking for my pain threshold, 'the wall' as us (?) marathon runners call it. The point at which running becomes very very painful, as sensible people (who've never been there) call it.
The closest i came was some very sore legs on about a mile stretch up a steep hill (which i admittedly walked a little bit of), and i did feel true terror when i took a wrong turn and got totally lost in a mid-wales cul-de-sack. Actually, that sounds too small, call it an estate. I was about quater of an hour in there running round looking for s way out! Hey, it was dark : D.
Anyway, i was out for about an hour and a half in total, not sure how far or fast i went, but judging by the not quite wall-like pain i felt and my speed compared to walking pace, i think 7 miles is a reasonable guess.
Not bad, but a long way to go for the 26.
Tonight - Friday night:
Went out for a run with the guy who'll be joining us in this suspect from of masochism.
We went for what was about 4 miles, but stopped for a blister on his foot. Didn't burst, but he'll probably be in need of new trainers, socks, and (in my opinion) talcum powder (put a bit on your feet, some more in your socks, and it'll help keep your feet dry, and thus reduce blisterability.
Hmm, blisters, don't think i've seen the last of those somehow!
Also tonight, back at his place, looking over a local os map for routes, we managed to spawn yet another potentially very bad idea. Taking a train to a station about 10 miles out of town and running back. This worries me a lot! Especially as he was talking about doing this soon.
Other things - will probably need to get to the gym to use the leg machines. Aerobic capacity is part of the requirement, as is plain running practice, but over that kind of distance, strong leg muscles seem essential to get through.
This is one idea i'm definitely up for. Building leg strength was one of my gym goals back before i broke my thumb (i know, legs, thumb, but the docs said no), with the intention of improving my agility and speed on the basketball court. Plus if i'm in the gym, i can't be out on the roads : )
That's about it so far, next instalment will be next time something related to the whole marathon thing happens.
