Wrong forum I know but shut up and read for a second.

I wanna buy Ocean's 11 on DVD(region1) but is there much difference in the picture quality between a Region 1 DVD and a Region 2 DVD?

I know there is *some* difference but is the difference so big that I might as well wait for the Region 2 release.

Before you ask..Yes my player is Multi Region and I have tried a region 1 DVD on it before but that was an old Cartoon(rock on Transformers) and it looks exactly the same as my Region 2 DVDs.

anyways enough babble. Please someone help.

Righty then, this is a funny question to answer because many people will tell you they know the truth, but ignore them, and listen to me......

Region 1 DVDs are encoded in NTSC format.
Region 2 DVDs are encoded in PAL format.

However, most multi-region DVD players are very clever inventions and you'll never notice the difference.

If your lucky, your DVD player will let you select an output mode. I have an Xwave LB900, and it does exactly that. I can chose PAL, NTSC or Auto.

If I chose PAL, every DVD played in the system will playback in PAL mode, however, because the DVD is encoded in NTSC it will skip every couple of seconds, because of the difference in the format, although most DVD players can work around this so you never notice it.

If I chose NTSC, every DVD will playback in NTSC (less lines, higher refresh (60hz)).

If I chose auto, the player will detect what format the disc is in, and play it back in this default mode.

In terms of picture quality, the difference is noticable on most systems. The colour quality is the most important thing. NTSC playback doesn't support as many colours as PAL, and as an effect will have a washed out look when playing back DVDs. This is down to the way that the TV displays the information on the screen and nothing to do with the actual DVD or the DVD player.

Now, some DVD players will also give you the option of playing back in PAL60. Which is basically PAL but with a refresh rate of 60hz rather than 50hz. This allows NTSC DVDs to play on a PAL format colour system but keep their 60hz refresh.

In the end, most of these options will be unavailable to you, and your DVD player will have set defaults for each scenario.

I'm just lucky and made sure I could source an all region DVD player which let me set it up exactly the way I wanted.

For some reason I keep hearing it in Police Chief Wiggums voice? ...

I think I'm confusing it from a episode where Wiggum sings out of tune to some rotweillers to make them angry, before releasing them to help pacify a rioting Springfield (though in the end they just attack Wiggum)... I dunno???

It made me laugh when I saw your name anyway... :)

And some of them only allow you to change regions a set number of times before they lock

None of which is really true...

PAL = more lines, better picture quality
NSTC = faster refresh

Conclusion PAL is the better system. Games distributors should stop being so cheap
