From Nintendo this morning:-

22 April 2002 - Nintendo today announced that it’s ground breaking new console, NINTENDO GAMECUBE, will launch across Europe on May 3rd at a recommended retail price of 199 Euros, and is expected to retail in the UK at £129 UK pounds.

This new price is part of Nintendo’s commitment to offer the consumer an unbeatable proposition. Nintendo plans to bring the NINTENDO GAMECUBE to market at the best possible price so consumers can feel confident they are getting the best deal at launch.

“Europe is a very important market for Nintendo and we are committed to making it a success. On May 3rd we will launch the only dedicated games console, the NINTENDO GAMECUBE, with an excellent software line-up, both for launch and throughout 2002, at a very competitive price. This is a very strong offer for consumers and one that we believe will ensure Nintendo’s success across Europe,” said David Gosen, Managing Director, Nintendo Europe.

Pre-orders for NINTENDO GAMECUBE in Europe are already extremely impressive, in the UK alone over 30,000 people have reserved their NINTENDO GAMECUBE in store. This new price point will continue to drive consumer demand in the run up to launch and the number of pre-orders is expected to reach over 50,000 in the UK.

Nintendo has committed approximately 500,000 units of NINTENDO GAMECUBE to Europe for launch day with a total of 1 million units for the launch period. Day one will also see the most impressive and extensive line-up of software titles ever seen for a console launch, with over 20 software titles available, growing to over 50 titles available by the summer.

Nintendo has already shipped approximately 4 million NINTENDO GAMECUBE hardware to Japan and North America by the end of March 2002.

Yes, it's great news and everything for us buying one, but I still don't think it was really neccesary as it was already the cheapest console in the next-generation.
One thing it might do is make other people see it as 'even more pathetic' then they already believe it is. And that won't help reduce all the comments we recieve for liking Nintendo and their consoles.

But still, i'm more than happy with the price, and i've also realised that I can get a my Dreamcast pack for less than that still!
And a GameCube with 2 games and a Memory Card will come to about £230 - meaning I could also get another pad with it!

Thanks Nintendo - but isn't it all a bit too early??

This is cool. I've been thinking about a second console (already being a PS2 owner), and came to the conclusion over the weekend, that despite the drop in XBox price, I wanted a Gamecube. Though there are games on XBox I'd love to play, in general it has a lot of PC/PS2 style games on it, and as I have those two platforms, I feel a Gamecube will add to the variety and style of games I can play. Me being a fan of games, rather than any particular genre. This news has well and truly sealed it. I guess I have to go through some Ninty initiation ceremony involving purple paint, a plunger and getting my Brosnan pierced?

Puddleface, you have the best name i've ever seen on these forums!
Well done : )

Hmm, new prices (SR):
Cube alone- £135
Well, only £10 over the equivalent in euros, not bad i guess, compared to what most places will probably do.

Star wars pack- £185
Hmm, cube @ 135, game @ 35, third party pad and memory @ £25 (all rough figures) = £195 - save a tenner, or get dodgy pad and memory for £15, depending on how you want to look at it. Not too bad though.

Still do feel slightly disappointed. After all, xbox buyers save £100, we're looking at just £30.
Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, obviously it's much better than nothing, i'd just expected more. I think i expected it to come from nintendo's cuts though, not SR.

£150 wasn't too cheap. All Nintendo said was 250 euros which people hastily worked out as being around £150 when it was actually nearer £155 so retailers weren't adding on as much as people seem to think - about £10-15 at most, plus a little bit of rounding up.

199 euros is £122.35 (or at least it was this morning). Even if they add £15 and round up again, like the worst offenders are doing at the moment, there's no way the price will be more than £140. Not even at HMV, the most evil shop on the high street.
