Every few years they will release a games console. This console will be heralded as "the most exciting thing since sliced bread" and will be a "revoloution" or something... However, it will require fans to totally upgrade since this new system is so good it will not have any of this backward compatibility that some rivals claim a plus factor. This will include the re-buying all their older games yet again because the new system either uses a different size cartridge or a newer cd based medium.
Secondly, the system MUST be hopelessly out-of-date with no internet or DVD access by the time of release and with any luck, out-priced by its rivals - but Nintendo will appeal to its gullible fanbase yet again to support them because the other consoles CANNOT let you connect your GameBoy Advance into their systems and play your new console games onto this lesser portable one!!!
And thirdly, Nintendo happily watches the money flood in whilst secretly knowing the new system will be life expired within two years, whereupon they can offer something like a "ram expansion" pack to prop it up for another year, disregarding the fact that its rivals have been dropping prices and selling bucketloads of units because their systems were ahead of their time when released....
But none of this matters to the "Ninnies" (official Nintendo groupies who buy nothing else but Nintendo because they believe its the best) because Nintendo has already conditioned them to their way of thinking since long ago...
But what do i know, i`m merely a PC owner who enjoys the sort of quality gaming, both on and offline, that console owners can only dream about....
As some of you stated, yes you do have to upgrade from time to time some of your PC components, but most PC owners do keep their systems running to minimum spec for years before then buying new or upgrading - my last PC last 6 years!!!
However, look at the console market and we see machines that outdate quicker than bread at Tesco`s with a maximum shelf life of 3-4 years. And i`m sorry if this sounds picky but Nintendo has been one of the worst offenders with a long line of pricey, incompatible and outdated consoles. One of you sited the GameBoy as being a successful console which is true, but like all Nintendo equipment, it resisted change until very recently with the advent of its colour screen (itself not a new idea as both Sega and Atari had dabbled there long before Nintendo)and now the GameCube which although now uses a CD based games system certainly has a major oversight with NO online support, oh and DVD is not just for films - its disc`s compact information tighter than ordinary CD`s and therefore store more information, thus better games - thats the other point i was trying to raise, if i want to watch films i use my DVD player, not my PC!!!!!!.
Oh, and its not just Nintendo`s fault, we see Sony releasing loads of sub-standard games that fail to use its console to the full, they flood the market hindering sales. For every 2 or 3 good PS2 games there has to be at least 12 or 15 stinkers!!!. X-BOX, well here i have a problem because according to you lot i should like this like a family pet, but seriously - the technology inside this so-called console is Pentium 3 based. Now if you consider that its highly likely that by the end of 2002 the Pentium 5 (or whatever Intel want to call it) chipset will be out, this will make the X-BOX two years out of date even though its less than a year old!!!.
And right now i could run 3 copies of Halo inside my PC without it breaking a sweat!!!
I suppose the main reason for my original rant was a) to get your attention, and b) to try to get you to see my point of view. I don`t like big companies telling me what to buy, i don`t see why console owners should be any different, but while you happily pay them your money without a question asked, they will keep shafting you. True it can happen in the PC world as well, it not perfect - but we are talking about millions of console users worldwide who deserve better.
Don`t let them dictate you, its time to tell THEM what YOU want!!!.
Every 6 or 7 years, Nintendo release a games console. This console will be heralded as "the most exciting thing since sliced bread" and will be a revolution or something. However, it is Microsoft this time who boast their console to be the "Most powerful games console on the planet". The new Nintendo console will require to upgrade to the new system, but which console doesn't? Even Playstation fans had to get the Playstation 2 to play Playstation 2 games! The Playstation 2 may have backwards compatbility, but the PSone doesn't have forwards compatability does it? This does include buying games on the previous system like Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raiders, even Grand Theft Auto 3 which is just a 3D version of the other games!
Secondly, the system will not be the most powerful, yet it will be a games machine. Although the GameCube doesn't have DVD, it does have the Internet unlike the Playstation 2 which currently boasts internet ready games without a modem. Nintendo will appeal to gamers of a wide audience because of all their different types of games first, second and third parties, and will also give you the option to connect your Game Boy Advance to the console as an extra controller.
Thirdly, just like Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo watches the money flood in whilst discussing new projects to boost the consoles life so that they can make a lot more money out of it. As any major games company knows, the longer they can keep selling a console, the more money they'll make, though Microsoft are having problems in Japan and Europe in doing so. Nintendo will more than likely release some kind of expansion for the GameCube. It shows innovation. As will the Playstation 2 however, which will soon have an external Hard Drive and/or Modem.
But none of this matters to biased fanboys who hath nothing better to do than to s***-off people who enjoy playing games on the console of their choice. Liking the Playstation 2 or X-box doesn't automatically mean a system with different properties is less good! The Game Boy Advance isn't the most high-tech system, yet it has done so well worldwide, and even the Wonderswan Color appear to be selling more than the X-box in Japan! It's not all about power you know!
But what do I know? I'm a PC fan who enjoys the quality gaming that a mouse and keyboard can bring, as much as a joypad can. Gaming isn't all about power. It's about emotion, excitement and about having fun! When you're playing games you don't think about how fast the clock-speed on a computer is, or how many Megabits the console is running at. PC-only gamers can only dream about how fun non-PC games are. Unless of course they download games using an emulator which if I find out, I'm likely to report as it's a crime.
Only quote like I did if you want to make comments specific to certain parts of what someone said, just to show them what your refering to!
NEVER! Quote a message like my reply and just add one line at the bottom!!!
I warn you NEVER to do that again! or else...

This upgrading rubbish being spouted by some PC GEEK who have to upgrade their computers every month if they want to play the new releases! MUPPET!
Also consoles have on average a 5 year life span. PC's have around a month if there lucky!
You don't re-buy all the old games either. You either buy sequels, or you don't be a fool and you actually keep your old consoles to!

No DVD because it's a GAMING machine NOT a multimedia device. And it's not really gonna be out priced if you look at the price of it! MUPPET!
Good marketing ploy that GBA and GC link up I'd say. The GameBoy is the biggest selling console on the planet, so it kinda makes sence for Nintendo to use that as a bit of marketing to tell people about it's Gamecube.
And "Oh No" Nintendo aren't trying something new are they. Can't have people being innovative can we!?! I expect that tripe to come from a pure PC gamer! There happy playing the same ol' rehased FPS and Command and Conquer clone over and over! MUPPET!

Life expired within two years? You really are a MUPPET!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Your refering to the N64 ans your then saying the Saturn and Playstation were better because they were ahead of their time! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! MUPPET!

You didn't have to state you were a PC owner! Most could have guessed!
Quality gaming?
There's some alright games on the PC, but I'd far rather have a console. All you get on PC is FPS, C&C games, or Diablo style games! I like a good variety personally!
So go back to your darkened room, and don't show your spotty mug around here again!

gba. get your facts straight before making sweeping generalisations.

no, if they want to play their older games, they can play them on their older console. and none of the older nintendo games are being re-released. If you're refering to sequels, every conslole, or pc, has them in abundance.

read as - the chimps moan about how rubbish cartridges are, then they complain when nintendo change the format.
> Secondly, the system MUST be hopelessly out-of-date with no internet

it's out-priced by its rivals BECAUSE it doesn't have dvd access. nintendo choose to make a games console just for games, instead of a multi-media entertainment machine. Doesn't play dvds, but the specialisation allows it the potential to do the whole games thing cheaper and more effectively.
as for the internet, gamecube requires the 56k or broadband adaptor to be plugged in, and it's ready to go.

they're trying out an idea, hoping to enhance gameplay elements, and inspire ownership of both of their consoles. has it been a significant part of the marketing of the gamecube's advertising campaign? not yet. they ain't appealing very hard, are they?

so it's actually nintendo that are releasing hard drive and modem add-ons for their console? and there was me thinking that it was actually sony, releaseing these for the ps2, and thinking you showed absolutely no basis at all for your comments. what a muppet i am. [read as 'what a muppet
*you* are']

i'm sure there are advantages to pc gaming as opposed to consoles, just as there are advantages to using a more specialised system (remember this? maybe you should have been taking notes while reading?). I'm not even going to go into what they are, as for most people who read this post, it'll be completely obvious anyhow. In the end, it's up to the individual consumer to choose. who probably won't be buying a console just so he can dream about having a pc instead.
