MCV reports British studio Rare could be wanting to loosen its ties with Nintendo. While several current Rare projects are slated for release on GameCube, the Warwickshire outfit may be wanting to branch out. The most dramatic move would be Nintendo selling its 49 percent stake or at least letting Rare develop for PS2 and Xbox. Rare has already shown a desire to gain freedom with a couple of N64 games last year having been self-published. MCV suggests relations between the companies may even have become strained after the exit of senior Nintendo allies Howard Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa.

Rare failed to deliver StarFox Adventures for GameCube launch as originally planned. Indeed, no Rare title has yet appeared on GameCube, with StarFox, Donkey Kong Racing, Perfect Dark 2 and new adventure franchise Kameo some way off. Nintendo UK told MCV this week that it was not aware of any change in relations.

The way I see it as long as Rare keep making quality games for GC i'm not bothered if they go Multi-platform, I just hope that the Mulit-platform thing doesn't mean that the quality of games drops.

This could define Nintendo's success with the Gamecube and would constitute a huge loss to Nintendo. I thought all of this was PS2 owners trying to put a spanner in the works, but there seems to much evidence around not to take this seriously. As they say, there's no smoke without fire. But then again, you could argue that an admirable Gamecube launch has made do without Rare, even if it lacks the killer app of Goldeneye, for example. There will surely be huge wranglings over possession of characters and contracts, etc, but Rare can only go multi-platform with Nintendo' complete acceptance, Rare cannot just walk away, and they have a duty to produce a certain number of games. What is always staggering is how small Rare are, but how much difference they seem to make. Either way, this story is going to snowball.

What the hell is the big deal ever game RARE make are substandand Nintendo wannabes with only Perfect Dark standing out on its own and the fact the Goldeneye team have left RARE means there is no need for this piece of tat... goodbye and so long. I just hope Nintendo don't want them to continue making games for them!

A direct port from the Dreamcast?

I can't find it in any local shops so waiting for the Gamecube release will have to be how I get me dabs on it.
