MCV reports British studio Rare could be wanting to loosen its ties with Nintendo. While several current Rare projects are slated for release on GameCube, the Warwickshire outfit may be wanting to branch out. The most dramatic move would be Nintendo selling its 49 percent stake or at least letting Rare develop for PS2 and Xbox. Rare has already shown a desire to gain freedom with a couple of N64 games last year having been self-published. MCV suggests relations between the companies may even have become strained after the exit of senior Nintendo allies Howard Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa.

Rare failed to deliver StarFox Adventures for GameCube launch as originally planned. Indeed, no Rare title has yet appeared on GameCube, with StarFox, Donkey Kong Racing, Perfect Dark 2 and new adventure franchise Kameo some way off. Nintendo UK told MCV this week that it was not aware of any change in relations.

If nintendo ACtually OWN 49% then Rare will stick to being for Nintendo for somewhile yet.. however i doubtthey actually own 49% and anyway i should think the stampers own the majority being the owners..........

But they all have to agree... and how often does that happen in business?

Also, they may have given away shares to employess as an incentive scheme when they were foremed (I seem to remember Apple payed employeess is shares when they were just starting up)...

There are companies who own 5-18% of a company and who are seen as having a controlling share

Apparently the company founders (Stamper brothers is it?) own the other 51%, giving them the controlling interest outright.

Not true.

It doesn't matter who owns the other 51%, as long as all 51% agree to "leave" Nintndo, they'll do it, as Nintendo will be in the minority.

Indeed. DK64 was probably one of the biggest dissapointments on the N64. I expected so much from it...especially since it was one of the first games to use the expansion pack. In the end it was hardly different to Banjo at all...
