I don't see him taking the armband anytime soon for England, and I honestly don't think he'll ever really be 'captain material'!
I feel that a captain should be a central player with a good view of the whole pitch. Someone who is also easily able to simply step-in and control things in his own free will. This is the position of a centre-back or even central-midfielder, and I believe (like many others) that this is where every top team's captain should be! Even if Beckham and especially Shearer have proven otherwise!
A good captain also needs to have a good amount of respect from both players and staff, aswell as fans for support on the pitch. Yes, Owen does have this due to his goal-scoring record, but I think that is what he should stick to doing, rather than controlling the game in other ways.
Gary Neville was favourite to get the armband for tonight's match, and now would be a good time for experimenting with him!
But I believe that due to 'earlier incidents' at international level that he does not have the required amount of respect, and therefore would not be right for the job now!
But once people have forgotten about the past, he should surely be considered as a vice-captain behind Beckham - if he's still within his playing days of course!
And obviusly Sol Campbell would've been chosen if it wasn't for that injury at the weekend.
lol
Owen is probably the only player in the team tomorrow that is guarenteed a first team place in the England team. That is a more likely reason why he is captain...

But i believe that a captain should not be a keeper or a striker. Also he still is quite inexperienced at international level. Captains have to lead the team when heads are down. I can't see Owen doing this.
He maybe popular but does that make him a good captain?

Alan Shearer has also retired from international football, hasn't he?

But maybe now Owen is captain for now, we might see some of those qualities emerge, as being captain brings extra reponsibilities and could bring out the best in someone like it did with Beckham.
Of course, whether he'll have it for the whole match is another question altogether, as didn't Sven say that he wouldn't over use players chasing medals?
Though Paraguay look unlikely to agree to allow Sven 11 substitutions.
Influence over other players
Determination
Teamwork
Mental Strength
Courage
Leadership
Alan Shearer has all these qualities, but Owen does not have all these qualities.
A better captain is Rio or Southgate as they offer players leadership and i cannot think why Sven has given the armband to Owen!
