In my view patriotism is being proud of the country you live in.

Am I proud of being English? In a word, not really. The only thing that's happened in my life time that made be proud to be English was when we beat Germany 5-1 in the football last year.

That's it.

Nothing else in my life, since April 21st 1981, has made me proud to be English.

Lot's of things have made me ashamed to be English. Mainly when English people go abroad and cause trouble, slurring our reputation.

I should be proud to be English. Our country has a great history.

But that's it. History. It's past, not now. Not any more. For how long can we rely on things years past to be proud of? For how long can we say "Yeah, but we had the Empire." Had. Not any more.

What are we good at on a global level? Music? Sport? Athletics? Films? Books? Is there any apsect of life where we are acknowledged as being the best?

Perhaps one. The ceremony for the Queen Mum. We're good at pagentry (if that's the right word for it), we're good at pomp and ceremony.

Why is this? Why are we crap at most sports, and face it, we are.

Ok, we're getting better at football, and we're ok-ish at rugby. But that's it. In the US athletes have sponsorship. They don't have to work, they can spend time training.

Over here? Redgrave and Pinsent had to work full time while training for the olympics the other year. This is wrong. Why were they not given sponsorship to help them achieve their best?

Why do we not have academies and things for young people who have an obvious talent, to help them get the most out of that talent?

Not just in sport, but in other things. Music, films, books, art... all the creative things.

I keep mentioning sport but it happens in all aspects of life. Even in politics, we're seen as being America's lapdog.

We do what Europe tells us to do, even on THE most ridiculous things.

Why? We're our own country. We should do what we want to do. Why listen to people in Brussels, who we haven't voted in, to tell us what to do? That's not democracy. Being told what to do by unelected people is not democracy at all. It's a farce.

Result:

I'm am NOT proud to be English at all. Being English sucks.

I want to see our national teams do well, I want to see us do our own thing.

Yes, being in Europe would be good for some things. And we should embrace those things, but we should ignore the crap that seems to come with it.

What's the saying? When in Rome do as the Romans? How about this one: "When in England do as the English"?

The other year Birmingham City Council decided to re-name Christmas to "Winter Festival" or some crap name like that. Why?

To accomodate racial minorities in the city who don't celebrate christmas. They don't celebrate christmas, that's fine with me. But we bloody well do. Why should we change to accomodate them?

I'm not racist at all. But they CHOSE to come here, we didn't FORCE them to. The celebrate their festivals, we celebrate ours. What's the problem?

Political Correctness gone mad, that's the problem.

Anyway, I've written gibberish long enough. Congratulations if you got to the end without skipping the middle out...

I'm Welsh.

Which is what I am told. I live in this country that doesn't really have an identity anymore (England). I'd much prefer to be back in Wales. Why? Because at least the people there are proud of something. Rugby is the sport. The fans don't knife each other after the match. Our leading players don't chase down Asians then moan when a Swede leaves them out of the national squad.

I'm proud to be Welsh.

"I can see no reason to be proud of England as a country"

Neither can I. Which is my point. People used to be proud to be English. Now we're not. Why?

"nationalism is a product created by bigots. Who cares where you're from - surely it's what you do that matters?"

That's rubbish, in my view.

Wouldn't you be annoyed if all the other countries thought that England was crap and all the English are useless? I would. That would p!ss me off big time.

What is so wrong with wanting to be proud of your country? You seem to not give a toss. That's up to you, I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like to know why. What are your reasons for not caring?

"I am not a racist but if people choose to live in this country then they should show respect for the traditions and beliefs of this country. If one of us was living in a foreign country we would be expected to follow their customs."

I agree with that completely.

So why are we so crap at sport nowadays ? cos at schools the kids are taught that it's all abouting taking part and winning doesn't matter - whatever happened to sports day ?all the kids do is their bit racing against no-one. Competition is not good for kids because the losers will feel like failures so dont give anyone a chance to win and no one will lose.

All this gives us is generations of kids that are brought up with no desire to compete against anyone else, let alone themselves and therefore have no desire to push and better themselves. It's just madness.

On another point in your post - Forgive me but I do belive this is England ?? It is Queen Elizabeth the Queen mum who died ? So why are so many local authorities banning schools from letting the kids see the funeral tomorrow on the grounds that it might be offensive in mixed race classes. I am not a racist but if people choose to live in this country then they should show respect for the traditions and beliefs of this country. If one of us was living in a foreign country we would be expected to follow their customs.

Rant over - waits for the flak !!

It's been said before and I'm going to reiterate.

This country - the one that once ruled half the populated world - is now simply an extension of America. No argument can win against this. Here's why:

Our leader - our elected leader, for god's sake - spends more of his time with his nose in world affairs and the 'War on terror' than he does back home dealing with the internal problems this country suffers. In his own words, we are 'America's closest ally'. How? Surely we are more of an advance warning post in the event of a real war? Our army is pitiful compared to theirs, as is our once-proud navy and air force. They can win all their fights without us, so why not get our country running efficiently before we start preaching to others?

The Royals. Social parasites of the ultimate class. When one dies, the nation is said to be 'in mourning'. I wasn't. I don't know anyone who was even disturbed by the QM's death. Our county council (Dorset) put out a book for people to sign, expressing condolences. Out of a county with a population of tens of thousands, there have been forty signatures. And ten of those have been sarcastic, claiming that it's a good thing she's dead. I don't wish death on anyone - I just think that the Royals are nothing but a money-grabbing tourist attraction. Yes - the Royal family are England's answer to Disneyland.

I can see no reason to be proud of England as a country - nationalism is a product created by bigots. Who cares where you're from - surely it's what you do that matters?

Well, we're good at rugby. Arguably the best in the world. Although...we did lose to France a couple of weeks ago. And anyway, I don't even bloody like Rugby.

Patriotism for me mainly revolves around sport, football obviously being the main one, followed closely by athletics.

Music? Not really, especially when we are the "Kings" of Garage, seemingly.

TV/Films?? Some great british comedies, but not many movies. To be honest, I don't care that much.

I get this all the time, as I live with my nan.

"Oh, its British lamb, I only get the best"

"We should never of those those immigrants over"

Then, you get all this stuff about back in her day. It appears, that not even dogs are the same nowadays and back in her day, they used to eat anything, but they're treated too well now.

I don't really see why you should be proud, but I assume you'd much rather be the British Empire then some dirty poor country, where you live on breed and have to travely 5 miles to collect dirty water from the river.
