As most BT customers will know by now (announced in September) BT are going to start charging for previously free services - 'Caller Display' and 'Answer 1571'.

They are going to charge £1.75 each per month - so an additional £42 per year!

It's a shame Freeola don't offer a phone service to go with their broadband as having a separate phone provider isn't so efficient.
I'm guessing many Freeola customers will be using BT for their line and phone service.

I've been with BT *forever* and for the first time am thinking of moving away.

Is anyone here using the Post Office?

Comparing them with BT they look a lot cheaper - unless I'm missing something???

Post Office:
Line rental: £12pm, Anytime calls: £5.75, free Caller Display and free Voice mail.
Total: £17.75
Anytime calls says it also includes UK mobiles at weekends.

Against BT's £15.99, £7, £1.75 + £1.75
Total: £26.49

I can opt in to a 12 month BT contract and get 'Caller Display' free for a year and buy an answer machine to avoid the other charges but I thought I would ask to see what others here do :¬)

I've mentioned this in the past as well Hmmm, I would definitely be interested in any deals of this kind. Like most we are having to look at our monthly outgoings. There are some cheap deals out there but most of them seem to be with companies I would rather not deal with.

Thanks for the replies.

I have to admit I'm worried that by moving 'they' will manage to break my Freeola Broadband! Or if there's a line fault the new supplier would be even more useless than talking to BT.

I see Entanet also resell Phone services. No mention of pricing or 'anytime' call packages. I've mentioned it in the past, but it would be good if Freeola could investigate this again.

I look after a number of people's ADSL setups and it's getting harder to keep them from moving to one of the competitive packages available these days. The FTTC situation is also a hard sell.

I'm currently looking at other 'phone/line' only providers to see if this is worth doing.

BT (via Twitter) asked me to complete a 'web form' to give them all the details - but all they did was repeat the new prices!
Apparently being a lifelong loyal customer counts for nothing.

We pretty much only have a landline for broadband, so Southern Electric worked out best for us - 12 month term (I think), weekend calls free, £10.99 a month (first 3 months free). Saves us 7/8 a month over the equivalent package we had with BT

I don't have much choice if I want any sort of usable internet speed, it's BT 37Mbps or any other ISP at 2Mbps or less. And, of course, you need a BT line rental with BT.

Sky have only just added Fibre services here, but I don't think they're any better and certainly no cheaper unless you also have Sky TV.
