XboxLive-gonna be great, we all want it, gonna all play each other blah blah blah. But I'm not 100% sure about all the technical mumbo jumbo, so I'd like to say, hold on a momnet.

I mentioned Broadband to my Dad a few weeks ago and told him the other night that Freeserve were doing a deal- £85 for all the equipment and FREE line registration worth £65. "good stuff" he said.

Now, this is where I'm getting worried. Looking through an old edition of Xgamer it had a broadband feature, and it came to USB modems, something which Freeserve broadband use. Xgamer only said "make sure the broadband modem you get has an ethernet port to be compatable with your Xbox." The picture beside this statement shows a green USB modem which i'm certain is the Freeserve one.

I go on to check btbroadband online, and it too uses ADSL with a usb modem. I check the broadband availablitity for my area and it says I might be able to get it. Hmmmm however NO MENTION OF AN ETHERNET PORT...

Please, someone who knows technical stuff inside out(Nomad, Tom ect) could you tell me if a USB modem can be made plug into an xbox, perhaps through buying an aditional connecter or something. Xbox Live doesn't nessicaraly require you to upgrade your line and get some dude into to know holes in your wall, does it? ADSL doesn't need that, right?

It would be a disaster if XboxLive could not be playable on through this.

I got the modem free seeing as my dad's a BT Employee, with all the technical computer mumbo jumbo. We decided to go for the USB one, just so we could see the little lights flash when it's doing stuff :-)

But then, we do have a ~300mhz computer devoted to it.

My Dads always saying "ohh we gotta get a new PC" and stuff like that, but he never does.

If I ever mention it he someimes gets annoyed saying "kids these days want too much,, be happy with what you got moan, moan" You get the picture i'm sure.

I'm proably just dreaming and all this broadband talk is very premature.

But the USB takes up abit more CPU power than the internal modem. My computer seems to use more CPU with the USB modem, than it did with a a 56K internal modem. But it maybe due to the internet being about 12 times faster :)

Yeah they probably will release the converter with the starter kit.

Just make sure you get the right modem for your computer. If your getting a nice new one then the USB would be really easy to set up and install. But if your keeping your low spec PC then probably best to go for a internal modem. Just keeping going on at your Dad saying "damn this PC is too slow, takes me ages to do my homework on. I need a new computer or I will failure school". That will get him reaching for his wallet :)

Surprisingly this piece or crap does have a USB port.

I'm clearer now on all this, thanks guys.

I bet you that I won't end up getting broadband anyway!

Tom and adrian, I think all your broadband knolege has made you thin hooking up XboxLive is more complicated than it really is.

I am sure Pcs, routers and all are not needed. I was also neer 100% certain than xbox already had a broadband modem in it, thus meaning the green froggy thing doesn't need to be used in the set up.

MS always said hookin xboxlive up would be a pieve of cake after all.

I wouldnt get a USB if I was you. Go for the internal modem. Your PC is too low spec to probably use a USB, and actually probably wouldnt even have a USB port.

OXM doesnt mention this as they are assuming that people have Cable. If you have cable you will have a Ethernet connection which would fit in the XBox. But ADSL uses a different socket.

Iam sure Microsoft or any other company will release a simple converter that will allow the ADSL line to go straight to the XBox and not via a PC. But at the moment the PC is probably a neccessary part in the set up. This set up has allowed me to play the XBox online already, as people have made software on the PC to link the XBox over the net.

The only possible reason for OXM keeping this sort of thing quiet is maybe just the fact they don't want to confuse people. It's not exactly simple, it even involves opening up your box.

But I have a feeling Microsoft will have something up their sleve, although nothing has been mentioned for the americans on beta trials.

It's far from ideal. But I have mine set up fine - so I don't care :-)
