I plan to get a 200 pound Hi-Fi system (in the Argos catalogue), and it claims to have pro-logic surround sound.
Part of the reason I want this is to get surround sound from my consoles.
I know that few of you have a Gamecube, but most of you seem to know what its Pro Logic 2 sound system is all about...
Would I plug the Gamecube into my Hi-fi, or just into the speakers, or are they incompatable full stop?
Also, I might well be getting an Xbox within the next 6 months.
As so many of you have said so many times, 5.1 is VERY different to Pro logic 1/2 (pro being analogue and 5.1 being digital).
But, if the 5.1 set up is INSIDE the Xbox, then I should just be able to wire it to the speakers, right?
Help if you can. :-)

You would probably have to get a proper 5.1 speaker set that you would use just for the XBox. As to have 5.1 you would need the amp and the 5 speakers and subwoofer. I doubt you get this sort of set up from that hi-fi your going to get. Why not try and save up a bit more and get a proper 5.1 hi-fi system.
But get a proper amp!!
If it's just a pro logic system or one of those stupid all in one systems it's rubbish!
Get a proper 5.1 amp.
My 5.1 Surround Sound Sytem supports: ProLogic/ProLogic 2/Dolby Digital/5.1/DTS, so if you are planning to get an Xbox in the near future then you may want to think about getting one which will support both Surround Sound for your GameCube (ProLogic/2) and your Xbox (5.1 and DTS). If games don't support 5.1/DTS then my Surround Sound System simulates its own 5.1 mixing the tracks as it goes along :)
For my Xbox I use an Advanced Scart Cable (RGB) which has an optical input socket joined to the box of it so that I can hook it from my scart straight into Amplifier. Then all of your speakers for the system plug into the back of the Amplifier accordingly (i.e Surround Speakers Left and Right into the Surround Sockets left and right on the Amplifier). My Amplifier has an Optical input socket on the back of it so connection to the advanced scart was pretty simple (after taking the covers off, Tom knows ;). The only wire which connects my Xbox to my Amplifier is the Optical input which retails at around £15 (mine came with the system). One other thing, get the model of your TV and email the manufactorer via their website just to make sure that the Scart Socket supports RGB (RED, GREEN and BLUE) :) Check to See if the HI-FI Amplifier has an optical input socket, most do but just check :)
That is basically the Setup you need for 5.1/DTS on your Xbox system. Here is what I mean in a few basic steps:
Xbox >>> Advanced Scart >>> Optical Input >>> Amplifier >>> GO! GO! GO!
For your GameCube however I am not entirely sure whether or not the Advanced Scart has an optical Input cable and therefore you may need to use a different method. This is what SR say about:
----------------------------------------------------
"LOGIC 3 GOLD PLATED SCART CABLE FOR GAMECUBE WITH AV ADAPTOR. Get the best quality picture from your Gamecube and Scart TV with this great, high quality Scart lead. The AV block is ideal for connecting up your Gamecube to a Hi-Fi or speaker system."
----------------------------------------------------
Now this is what you will need to get to connect your GameCube up to your HI-FI system. I am unsure about the cables as SR do not have any other additional information about the product so maybe Tom could help you on this one :) However I am sure that the cables will be self explanitary when you buy the Scart and the HI-FI but its best to check. You may want to consider getting a Surround Sound system that supports all of the different sounds and using an Xbox to play Music CD's through, thats what I do and the songs are even in 5.1 :)
Obviously the Xbox and 5.1/DTS is a lot better than ProLogic but the DVD menus from DVD's run on ProLogic sound and it doesn't sound that bad to be honest :)
Hope this helps! If you need anymore help feel free to add me to your MSN at:
