Just got the new Offical Xbox Magazine with a playable demo of Splinter Cell which is very impressive. They gave it 9.0/10, but then they also gave FIFA 8.4/10 which is a joke. Lots of other reviews inlcuding:

Unreal Championship 9.2/10 **Getting this**
Sega GT 2002 8.5/10 **Looks a tad over-rated - playable on disc**
Rally Fusion 8.0/10 **Fair enough - probably**
Micro Machines 6.6/10 **Looks the same as it did 10 years ago**
Colin McRae Rally 3 8.9/10 **Got it - fair score**

Lots of stuff in this months edition, worth picking up for the Splinter demo alone.

What you say does sound feesable about Splinter Cell 2 but I don't think we will be seeing that one until 2004. For now I think we are talking and looking too much into the future, Splinter Cell is going to be HUGE! All of the people I have spoken to so far have said the DEMO is superb and definitley a contender for GOTY! The previews have been amazing so far and the companies that have the full version say it manages to keep it all going throughout the whole of the game which is something which many let down on. There are 5 games I am getting between now and christmas and this is at the top of the list followed by:

Ghost Recon
Medal of Honour Frontline
Fifa 2003
Blinx: Time Sweeper

Depending on what people on here say about Blinx then I will keep that one open for either Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance or JB: Nightfire. I am really anxious to play Splinter Cell yet I know the game is still another 27 days away from release. Would the DEMO keep me going and give me a nice little taster until then? Is it a DEMO that you play over and over until the full version is released? If so then I am going to head straight down to the shops and get a copy because all this talk is making me very Splinter Cell hungry and I don't think I can wait another minute longer.

Sequel, as in Splinter Cell 2. I doubt that the full version released at the end of the month will improve on the demos visuals too much, and based on that I would say it doesnt use the XBOX to its fullest. Now that they have put in alot of work on the structure of the game (which appears to be excellent overall), they can devote more time to the sequel on improving the visuals, animation and gameplay. This is common procedure with most game franchises.

A good example of this is GTA. Rockstar got almost everything right first time around, and have been building on it in GTA VC, introducing improved visuals, sound and gameplay features. However, I would guess that they have pretty much pushed the PS2 to its limits with VC, which isnt that much better visually than the original (I dont think). As the Xbox hasn't been taken full advantage of this time, I think that the SC development team will have alot more room for visual improvement when it comes to making the sequel.

This is all looking ahead though. For now, I think Xbox owners should not pass this game up as it's looking like it will be massive. And if it does, I am sure it will sell a few Xboxs this Christmas.

Sequel? I take it you mean the full version? Yes I have read an extended preview today and thy are saving some nice suprises for the full version game which will be released later this month. These extras are going to be kept quiet until the game is released but they said they are something to look forward to. I am really looking forward to the release of this game and in my opinion it is going to be the next best Xbox game after Halo, although how long it stays as that is anyones guess because with Ghost Recon, Medal of Honour Frontline, Brute Force, Metal Gear Solid 2, Operation Flashpoint, Shenmue 2, Perfect Dark 2, Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden I wouldn't like to predict which is going to be the number 1/2 Xbox game :) Not a bad situation to be! Still it is my most anticipated game of this year :)

To be honest, the graphics and animation look a little unpolished - they wont blow you away like some people will have you believe. However, once you turn on nightvision, it looks amazing - almost photo-realistc.

On the demo, there is no evidence to suggest that it uses the XBOX to its full capabilities - something I am sure will be addressed in the sequel. Until then, the current state of the graphics are certainly good enough, including certain aspects that will definately impress.

It is a great idea because you actually need it - its not just a gimmic. You have no idea what is behind a door - you could open it to find someone with a gun in your face, so you need to see whats in there. If there are guards patroling the room, you can see when they move away from the door and then creep in.

If the gadgets and lighting (which have all added to the hype of the game) were just gimicks thrown in there, this game would have been a huge disappointment. As it is though, they seem to be integral aspects of the game.

I havent played Hitman 2, but I used to have the original on the PC which was too damn hard - didnt have the patience for it. I think SC will be more linear than Hitman, which probably wont make it as frustrating.

What is special about SC is that you can do things that you have never done before in a video game. From the demo, it is apparant that the use of light is an important factor in the game. You have to hide in the shadows (which sometimes need to be created by strategically shooting out lights) and use your nightvision so that you can see, but cant be seen. Another cool gadget is the fibre optic cable, which you slide under doors to see whats behind them. There are also instances where you need to use thermal vison, allowing you see people behind curtains and such.

Although Hitman has some excellent qualities, I much prefer the gameplay style in SC.

As your saving up for this game, I wouldnt bother getting the demo if I were you, as it will only lead you to the same conclusions I have stated. Once you finish the mission, it will just leave you craving more, and since the full game is out at the end of the month, you might as well save £6 and put it towards that.
