There have been many games that have come out, good games such as Jak and Dax and Silent Hill, DMC even that were shorter than MGS2 and had less replayability than MGS2 but did they get the kind of stick about being short? Nope.
Why, i cant tell, maybe it was the hype or maybe its the fact that at the moment MGS 2 is the PS2's pride and joy and people are just trying to hit it where it hurts most.

I think MGS 2 was one of the most exciting games ever made, and The codec messages, cut scenes and playability is part and parcel of the game, its all about personal choice, I for one enjoy playing this kind of game and don't really mind the cut scenes because they are important part of the game in terms of bringing out the storyline and allowing you watch an amazing piece of art.
however that is only my opinion.
I did, I still bought it, and love playing it. If you got carried away on the hype, then maybe it was a little disappointing. I knew exactly what to expect, though, and I think it's a fantastic game.
