I've been very impressed with the screenshots etc. of some of the Gamecube games. I'm even thinking of getting one even though i have a PS2. The price is very tempting. Is anyone else having these horrid thoughts put in their heads by the devil?

GC and PS2 aren't really in competition with each other. nintendo and sony seem to of found their ideal niches in gaming and managed to exploit them remarkably well.
i.e. nintendo are great at making platformers, FPS and multiplayer games, but they really suck at arcade-style games (fighting, racing, etc.) or anything aimed at the adult gamer.
This is where Sony come in, with playstation - which does everything nintendos systems can't manage really well. But but can't manage to get the stuff nintendo are good at (FPS, multi, etc.) quite right.
So if you really want the best out of gaming, I say get both, or wait to see what the X-box is good at (if anything!)
