I can help because of gravity. It only needs the disc to be a little too far from the laser, and all sorts of problems can occur. If the PS2 is vertical, *sometimes* the disc can have excess 'wobble', which means it moves away from the laser, giving errors.
As your machine is already flat, though, it's likely to be either the laser developing a fault, or the game disc has got damaged.
When do you get the read error? Is it stopping the disc loading, or does it happen during the game? Check the disc for scratches, particularly near the centre if the game won't load. CDs and DVDs are read from the centre to the outside.
If the disc is undamaged, it could be that your PS2's laser unit is developing a fault. How old is the machine? If it's still under warranty, phone Sony on 08705 99 88 77 and they will replace it free of charge. If it's not under warranty, phone them anyway and see what they can do.
Also, where do you have your PS2 when in use? Make sure it's not anywhere that static could interfere with it, such as on a carpet or in direct contact with the TV. Static electricity is a killer for any electronic equipment.
I turn it off at the back, anyway.
I personally switch it off at the back to allow the machine to cool down.
My VC copy froze up on 3 occasions where it tried to access the disk, left the machine off over night and all day (work :-( ) and tried the mission first thing in the evening and it worked first time.
Just a thought but it could be over heating.

Err...how can the laser burn the DVD/CD when it's switched off? DVD Players don't have these kind of problems......neither do CD players, I think we'd have heard something about this ages ago if this was the case!
> leave them in. is that a bad thing :-(
Not necessarily. I usually leave games in if I know they're what I'll be playing next time I have the machine on.
Do you have your PS2 vertical or horizontal? If you have it vertical, try switching to horizontal - that can help.
Do you have your machine on it's side or sitting down?

Yeah could be. As some times the laser can burn the disc.
