Will Whatsisface from Pop Stars admits he's gay.
Shock horror!
I'd never have guessed.

Which means, within a week, Robbie Williams will come out with some statement or stunt to reclaim his crown as "Clown Prince of Pop".

It's almost like this whole thing is scripted.
"Will is gay!"
"So, his single is still really, really weak"

I do like the bit in the song where he says about "loving you girl...".
Nothing like integrity and honesty in your work huh?

Gay/Straight, at the end of the day, his song still remains an abject exercise in marketing.

I agree with you, that sort of music does suck, and I would never buy any of it.

I agree with what you're saying about the music industry completely.

I'm not really sure how this discussion began, as we both have the same opinions.

Weird...

I'm not trying to convince anyone to do anything.
I'm expressing my unhappiness and disgust at what I feel towards mainstream music.
I'm not going to spend hours typing myself silly trying to justify my emotions or reasons.

I personally find the charts and what passes for music an insult to people that care about and listen to music.
If you like Steps, good on you.
If you like S Club Seven, good on you.
I don't like this stuff.

I say it sucks.
Other say it doesn't.
We're both right and we're both wrong.

The only thing I do know is that 20 years from now, nobody will remember 90% of the acts around today.
And that's fine by me.

Well, I don't listen to it, or watch it, or buy it.

This "Just because people eat the only thing on the menu, doesn't mean they like it" thing doesn't really hold any water either.

There are plenty of radio stations about that don't play mainstream music - XFM being the one that both you and I listen to.

No one is forcing people to listen to radio 1. If they really hate that music that much they'll search for a different radio station that plays something they like - it's as simple as that.

The fact is if people didn't listen to this music, radio stations wouldn't play it. Because if they did, they'd lose listeners and lose money.

Yes the record companies are only doing it for the money.
Yes you're playing right into their plan if you buy the record.
Yes the actual music is taking a back seat.
Yes these people are singers - NOT artists.

We agree on all this. Yet the fact is that people buy it and listen to it - otherwise the record companies wouldn't release it.

Another thing you have to remember is that the single buying public is not a cross section of the community. The people who buy singles the most are teenagers. So music that appeals to people who are older - such as yourself - will never, ever get into the charts.

Is that wrong?

If so, how can you change it? You can't *make* older people buy singles, and you can't change younger peoples tastes.

There is a tv programme to find a singer.
This programme is shown over many weeks.
A few people make it to the later stages.
The entire reason for the show is to make money through commercials during the show and to make even more money by releasing a single, certain to get to number one based on the hype of a tv show.
The only purpose of said show is money.
They pick a dancing bear and put them through the machine so they appear as bland and identikit as the next one.
You buy the single, created from a tv show to make money, and give them more money.

Pop Star = Money for Record Label and TV Company.

That is not being a sheep, that is being played by a company designed to make money out of yet another pop monkey.
No long lasting impact, no creative input from said "pop star", nothing new to offer the music world, nothing of interest said in the song.

This is not, never was, and never will be about music.
This is about making money.
The fact that any one of the thousands of hopefuls could have been the winner indicates just how important the actual person is.

They sold it.
You bought it.
They move on.
The End.

In the meantime, thousands of bands are playing tonight all over the country to a handful of mates and other bands.
Some of these bands could create the best music you'll ever hear but they dont stand a chance against homogenised, bland corporate machinery that has zero interest in the music.
Look back to the 70s, music wasn't about corporate sponsorship, product endorsements and the like.
The Who never put their name on anything, neither did Led Zeppelin/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Pink Floyd/Grateful Dead etc.
The fact that they played music because they loved it means the tunes will last a lot longer than yet another pop-monkey, souleslly mouthing words written by someone else for no other reason that to take your money.

That is what I find so abhorrent about this whole "pop" thing.
It's not about the music, that's almost secondary.
It's about marketing, promotion, and being able to sell anything you want to to people and tell them it's good.

Virgin are the worst for this.
They have their Megastores, and the radio station instore plays their own artists on the Virgin/V2 Labels.
They have huge window displays featuring their own artists.
Virgin don't even need radio or your opinion to create a hit anymore.

Music, for the most part, is souless, meaningless tosh that smothers any spark of originality or genuine art by those that play because they love music.
Pop Stars/Pop Idol etc etc are pure exercises in hype and marketing.

I'm sure you're bring out the same old arguments about people like this stuff, but if all you ever hear is the same, bland pre-marketed stuff on the radio stations, how will you ever hear anything else?
Just because people eat the only thing on the menu, doesn't mean they like it.

And yes, there is resentment on my part.
I bust my heart out playing genuine music, written by us in freezing cold rooms because we love it.
ANYONE can sing someone else's song.
They just use "Harmonise" which treats your voice and tunes it to the nearest vocal pitch on the computer.
Until someone stands on a stage and sings/plays directly to people with no props and can say "I wrote this", then in my book you are not a musician.
You are a performer, and there is a world of difference.

---

Today's rant has been brought to you by Clutch, Tool, Dr John, Gomez, Stevey Ray Vaughn and a million other real bands that just about get by on the margins of popular music.

I haven't heard the song, but I'll stick up for Wookiee while he's not here.

The fact is POP music is just that, POPULAR. Therefore quite a few people buy it.

If dance music suddenly became amazingly popular, then that would be the new POP music. Would it then be acceptable to buy stuff that is cosidered POP now?

Is it only considered sheep like to buy S Club 7 or Will now, but if that wasn't the mainstream type of music, it would suddenly be ok to by their albums?

How does it work?
