All it is Tom is a Wireless network card. He probably has either cable or ADSL. Wireless network cards work over radio waves or something like that so you can transmit data from PC to PC with no wires. His internet connection would be plugged into his main PC and then his laptop has the wireless network card and can be moved around the house while still being networked. Could be pretty cool sitting out in the garden in the summer using your laptop and surfing the net.

Maybe just buy a long length of Crossover cable and put that into your router and then trail it downstairs when needed. You may be able to get it working through the laptop, if it has a Network card in it. If your lap top does have a network card then plug in a crossover cable from that to the XBox. This should work as a Wireless connection from your main PC to your laptop is probably running at a max of 11Mbit which is at least 22 times faster than your connection if its the 512K broadband.

if it is perfectly fine on a pc and doesn't work or connect on xbox live you will need your MAC address or as its called on windows xp subnet mask.

First of all i would recommend to register bu connection your modem straight to your Xbox just to make sure everything is ok there.

As for your upstairs/downstairs prob......

Wireless connection is probably not the best way to go for your Xbox as you may experiance inturuptions and lag more then a wire through connection.

If possible connect using Ethernet cable!!!!
