Gamecube: £150 upwards
PS2: £200 upwards
X-BOX: £300 upwards
also gamecube controllers have a more comfortable feel than X-BOX.

Not true: ignore impending deadlines and then stay up all night writing a stupid essay, you end up like this. Take drugs, don't have any deadlines at all. A much better option.

You can't buy an XBox because they're too big and you run the risk that Bill Gates is hiding inside it. He won't necessarily be in it of course (he only hides in every thousandth console) but if he is there then he'll get out at night and use your toothbrush, wear your pants etc etc. In the morning he'll cry if you mum doesn't make him pancakes for breakfast and then you'll be late for school. And if he finds any apples in your fruitbowl then he'll try and flush them down the toilet, probably causing a blockage. (All this is documented at www.microsoft.com/amIinyourXBox?.html).
As for GameCube and PS2: there is no-one inside these consoles, so don't worry. Choose whichever one takes your fancy. I'd go for a GameCube myself because of all the cool Nintendo games you'll be able to get.
If you want an instant large number of titles to choose from with games such as MGS2, Maximo, Ace Combat 4 and Devil May Cry, then you'll probably want to be looking at the PS2. Its had a head start over the other 2 consoles so it has a larger amount of games right now. But at the same time it has the lowest stats out of the 3 consoles. Lots of third party support means that there shouldn't be much worry about a constant flow of games. Sony and Microsoft aim more for casual and mature gamers with titles such as GT3 (Sony) and Halo (Microsoft). Nintendo on the other hand are more family orientated and rarely change their direction from this. Resident Evil is an exception of course.
If you want the Nintendo games such as Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, you'll want to look at the Gamecube. Of course the console will have third party support with games such as Rogue Leader and Resident Evil on the way, but I think this consoles strong point will be more based around what games Nintendo themselves and Rare bring out. The cheapest of the 3 consoles, but be careful because the memory cards won't be holding too many saves with certain games looking to take up a whole card. Pretty much the second place console when it comes to stats out of the 3. Nintendo are the most experienced of the 3 companies but that doesn't mean to say they will dominate as Sony showed with their arrival into the games market.
The X-Box has the highest stats of the 3 consoles and also the highest price. Its online capabilities will require a broadband connection, but if you have access to this or can get access to this then it offers the best online potential with more players being supported in 1 game. It has a hard drive with a lot of space for game saves and you can rip tracks from CD's to play during certain games.
Microsoft seem to be attracting plenty of third party attention so games should end up coming in thick and fast. If you want to play DVD movies on this console your going to have to fork out around another £30 for the add on to do this. A console with a lot of potential, but also the new kid on the block. It comes down to how much money Microsoft will pump into this venture and so far it looks like being a lot.
In my opinion the PS2 will provide you with the most longevity and the best gaming experience.
But why do you want my opinion, or anyone's? Don't you have your own opinion? What console you get depends on your choice of games. If you last fast paced action, maturer games, racers, a few cuddly platformers, realism, flight sims, FInal Fantasy, fighting games and generally good quality playing-with-your-mates-after-the-pub Pro Evolution Soccer style games then get a PS2.
If you like ctesy cuddly platformers, bright colours, games for younger gamers, a single exclusive Resident Evil game, Mario, Pikmin and general Nintendo-stuff then get a GameCube.
If you want a nice black doorstop that hums get an Xbox.
Your choice, based on your opinion.
