The X-box has an immediate difference compared with both the Playstation and the Gamecube, it is American. And the way it is being shown off is obvious. Although I am very much anti-Playstation it didn't simply force its way into the industry. The Playstation was a well-designed console, admittedly not as impressive as the N64 specification wise but with CD technology, easy 3D graphics and plenty of public support, designers of all shapes and sizes approached the Playstation. It was because of how Sony developed the Playstation that caused its massive success!
Nintendo are also different, they have been around for over 100 years and have slowly gained respect of the Japanese public. When they designed the first Game and Watch systems they were not a massive success and got hold of a very imaginative man Shiguru Miyamoto who invented Donkey Kong and Nintendo took off. Shiguru or Shigsy as he is often known trained other developers up, telling them not to worry about systems specifications and let their minds run riot. Nintendo didn't just steal designers from other companies they created there own, Nintendo are a company that have slowly grown and expanded and do keep getting better and better.
So here comes the lets dig at Microsoft technique. As much as it would be nice to say that Microsoft will be successful because they will create a system that is attractive to third party developers like the Playstation was or have over many years, matured and trained their own designers in order to get better and better like Nintendo did, I just can't. And you will all agree Microsoft has barged its way into the industry, it has bought its way in. It has failed to gain any respect like Sony and Nintendo instead it has bought it! Microsoft haven't designed a system that is attractive to third party developers, it has spent loads of cash on the best specs, broadband Internet, hard drives and such like. This is what it has done it hasn't like the Playstation (or more recently the Gamecube) been cleverly designed so it doesn't need all these flashy extras.
As for maturing designers, you are kidding me right? Sony's Playstation has managed to make itself successful gaining large amounts of third party support, yes I often say Sony's success lies with its Third party support and I am right but this Third Party support has appeared because Sony managed to make such a good system in the first place! Nintendo have managed to train up a brilliant squad of designers, Shiguru and Satoshi are names of two of the more famous ones. Meanwhile Microsoft didn't do any of the above, it bought the exclusive rights to popular beat 'em up Dead or Alive 3, it bought many companies such as Halo developers Bungie, it grabbed exclusive rights to as many games as possible such as Jet Set Radio Future and Shenmue! Microsoft has guaranteed a good set of games not by attracting them or by training them but by buying them.
Then there is advertisement, sure Sony advertises a lot but Microsoft's advertisement is stupid! In Australia there is floor tiles with X's on it!!! They go and make a big fuss out of the games they bought the rights too, it brags about the DVD player, the MP3 player, the Hard Drive and the internet out of the box which it rammed into the system in order to buy the public over! It begins to worry me about the future of video games. Microsoft is all we can (realistically) have as regards PC's, but now Microsoft has strong competition in the form of Playstation and Nintendo. And as rich those two Japanese kings maybe Microsoft are just that bit richer, and I was seriously worried that they will eventually crush Sony and Nintendo. Luckily the Third Party Developers aren't willing to let this happen, already afraid the Playstation 2 would rule the market they decided to make more multi-format games. This is because Sony can't start making developers pay more for the DVD's and the public more for the games as they are forced to drive prices down to better the competition!
But you can't deny Microsoft are doing something definatly American and trying their best to buy in to a booming industry caused by Nintendo and Sony. Despite this dig at the X-box it has got the rights to some first rate titles that make the system become very good indeed. But I can tell you this, Microsoft can buy all the best developers, specialists and advertisement but it can't buy my love.
Here's to the Future.
Dringo.
...And yes, I know that's what a console IS... but somehow, Sony made the Playstation out to be that way, and it just ended up as this cool game playing machine, with a "pick up and play" controller, and so on. It was the student machine.
The X-Box isn't. It's overpriced, and for gaming nuts only. And for that, there aren't that many gaming nuts games on it. People who don't mind seeing more of the same will be happy, but for the rest of us, it's just the same old damn release games over and over... bar Halo, of course, which I must play.
But it'll come out on PC anyway.
The Phillips CDi failed as it was expensive and crap, the Playstation suceeded as it was cheap and developers could liked it...
The X-box hasn't created the same respect the PS1 did it has mearly bought it, bought developers, bought the best economists, advisers, developers etc... sony mearly designed something that attracted them... I don't like Sony i don't belive there entry to the market was any good but i belive it to be better than the x-box.
They paind developers to go PS exclusive, and offered reduced publishing costs.
They bought a few 2nd parties
They had lots of advertising
They paid for exclusives
So, what has MS done differently? They have put in just the same amount when you take into account:
1) The massive increase in the number of gamers and cost of game development from when Sony came in (a few million gamers) and now (hundreds of millions)
2) The PS had no reasonable competition for the reason in my last post. Hence Sony didn't have to spend as much as MS are now.

The Playstation was a well thought out system, i can't believe it i back up the PS1 for the first time and i am attacked... The Playstation developed a console that was easy to work on and made it all cheaper, this opened up so many new companies making the industry as big as it is today...
Microsoft meanwhile didn't gain the respect of third parties, it has bought so much, it has bought its way into the industry and other third parties e.g. rockstar found the system attractive as it looks to be a sure fire hit with all the money they are pumping into it...
I am not the only one who shares this view...
Errrr... so Ninty have done no wrong? What about the Virtual Boy? What about the 64DD? What about the pre-launch of the N64. And before you argue with the last one, although the N64 did have some of the best games of all time, the range of games was exceptionally low- with good titles having months between launches. Ninty fell out with most developers when they said "only we will be allowed to develop for the console at first, with other developers following later". It's no wonder why Square left!
Add to that delay after delay on the console! Great success!

I used to be totally biased towards Nintendo, most probably becasue I could only afford one console, but ever since I got a job all my Bias towards Nintendo has dissapeared.
I dont "love" any company, as that can totally blind you to what is coming from the "opposition"
End of the day, I will give my money to the company which gives me the best games. Regardless of thier name or history.
Like Sony with the PS, MS have produced an exceptionally easy to program for console, based on direct X with PC style architecture.
They have produced excellent development tools (ulike the original PS2 kits), which, like Sony with the PS, they have near given away.
The have, like Sony, set up HQs away from home (Japan and Europe).
They have, like Sony, bought second party developers (although Bungie are far better than anything Sony got).
They have, like Sony, proved their commitment to developers by putting lots of advertising into the console.
So, tell me again, what have MS not done that Sony did with the PS? Oh yer... they didn't get in bed with Ninty for a night.

SEcondly i said Nintendo have been around 100 years and gained respect of the japanese public, basically Nintendo is a familar name as they've been around over 100 years i didnt say it was in the same industry... so you can't disprove something that wasn't wrong.
