Today was actually really good. Enjoyed it. But the person I was next to was annoying me. And he had a terrible attitude about the work. But I just tried to block him out.

All I had to do was sort the post, which was very easy. Going to be working there again next week. £12.50 an hour next week. Was only £9.80 an hour today. But still its good pay, and not had much money in a while. So will be good to have that money now.

Also got told today that postal strike finishes on wednesday. But wish it had have finished earlier. Girlfriends birthday tomorrow and can’t give her, her present because its coming in the post and has not got here yet. But hopefully will be here by wednesday. Would've looked for it there. But they probably wouldn't had let me!

But all in all enjoyed my day there today, and looking forward to going back.

You dont need a Uni qualification to be well paid these days. I dont have one, nore does anyone I work with, and at our level in our job we're on 38k sterling, only in the job 18 months.

That's not how Royal Mail are doing it otherwise it would be a good thing. Their idea of flexible hours is they'll keep swapping your hours around depending on how much mail there is. So on Mondays and Fridays the two busiest days you'll probably be expected to come in about 2-3 hours earlier, whereas on the other days when there's less work you'll be in later. It doesn't bother me as i don't have a family but i can see it being a problem for those with kids in school who work at 6pm and are told they have to come in at 3 or 4pm. You don't get to choose your hours, they'll tell you when they want you in.

> that said for 8.80 thats still an awesome pay rate.

Indeed, i used to do data entry stuff and for 30 hours i was just about making as much as i am doing 20 hours here.

"flexible hours introduced (which though doesn't affect me can cause serious headaches for those with families i would imagine) "

Funny, i always though flexi time was a great thing. You could put in the same amount of hours each day OR you could work really hard one day and reduce the working hours of at another time. Hell take an early weekend if you want, just make sure to come in an hour earlier or leave an hour later.

that said for 8.80 thats still an awesome pay rate. But the other problems aren't so good.

Well, can only talk for my office as it seems there's varying rates depending on where you live. Here though it's 7.20 or so when you start, and it raises after you pass your 3 month trial (basically turn up each day on time and you pass) then again at 6 months and again after a year, so right now after a year and a week i'm on 8.80.

The strike isn't just over pay which i don't think the general public realises as the papers only seem to report on "Royal Mail workers strike over pay deal" They don't bother reporting about how there'll be around 40,000 job cuts, flexible hours introduced (which though doesn't affect me can cause serious headaches for those with families i would imagine) overtime being scrapped which many people need to pay their bills and such considering most of the workforce is now part-time, pensions being slashed etc etc. There's a heck more to the new plans than just "2.5% pay rise"

Except i'm not in the union like pretty much everyone else who comes in (with the odd scab here and there) so we don't get that hassle.

If they'll pay you somewhat decently without a uni qualification, and if Royal Mail's still around in 2010 when I get my BA, I may have to talk to them... :)
