With today's announcement of the XBox One we now know all of the contenders in the next generation of the console wars!!!1 In the red corner we have the latest iteration of Sony's gaming powerhouse, the Playstation 4. Nothing original with the name, but why change a winning formula?

In the blue corner (or should that be green) we have the XBox One. Will people think that it is 360 times more inferior that the XBox 360? Will they compare it to the PSOne? Is their naming convention too confusing for anyone to truly follow?

And in the brown corner is the Wii U. At least they're sticking to what they know. Stick with the Wii name, because that works. And why not stick with the same policy of not backing it at launch with enough games either, amIright? Then, when the games do come, they're the same games we already played. When did Nintendo release an original game? I'm thinking GameCube era. No doubt when the games do come along they will be good, but the way Nintendo are likely to drip-feed them through there won't be enough to keep people interested. The tablet is neat, but so far no one is doing anything interesting with it.

I think the Wii U could put Nintendo in some serious trouble, but they'll always make money from their games - but could we one day see a day when Nintendo release games on another platform?

So it will be left to the big boys to duke it out. Punches will be thrown. Blows will be landed. At the end of the day many of the big games will be multi-platform, but there will be some exclusives. If you can't call it from the exclusives and you're looking at what else it can do, well frankly I'd go for the Sony kit. It looks better. It won't make you pay for Kinect you might not even want, and, at the end of the day, it looks better.

So! Who will you back in the next generation!?

Cheap PC components that'll play all the latest..

Considering that's the majority of a new system, and it will work with bits cannibalised from your old system (case, power supply, monitor, keyboard and mouse, disc drive, hard drive..), that's a full upgrade for pretty much nothing.

There are some pretty amazing deals on their chas ... may have to just keep that link in mind

PC's will always be technically superior (if you keep them updated with the latest components), the thing is most casual gamers probably can't be bothered. You can buy a 360/PS3 for about £150 these days, one component for a decent spec gaming PC could cost you that.

It'll play the latest games at full spec too.

I still maintain that overall, I spend far less on my pc than anyone does on consoles.

Now with that, I will wholeheartedly agree but will they? Maybe they will take some notice now that they have been crowned the Consumerist's Worst Company in America for the second year in a row![/i]

I'm not sure they're bothered as long as they keep selling their yearly franchises in great number. They've already shown a complete lack of interest in customer feedback from the mess that was the Wii U and Vita FIFA 13 games (basically lazy ports of older titles) by suggesting that they sold poorly because of the consoles rather than the bad reviews and complaints...

I really think E3 will be the turning point for the Xbox One. If they show enough games then all will be forgotten for the typical Xbox user.

I do think the reveal will have probably pushed a few people over to PS4 or PC though, as Microsoft really didn't cater to their core audience at that show (absolutely no games footage, just TV, TV, TV and some CGI at the end).

Their messages were not clear, either, which has led to all the news stories like the pre-owned issue (it WILL support second hand games, but it looks as if MS themselves will have greater control over the pricing and market).

Yes, i think Sony will probably follow suit but just haven't mentioned the DRM issue so that MS can take the flack for now, but if they're fortunate and somehow have managed to broker a deal with EA they might not have DRM at all, which would be a big scoop for them.

Wii U is sadly under sold on the PR side which has led to third parties pulling support. If Nintendo's Pre-E3 announcements next month can find some way of providing a few surprises they can still turn things around, just like they did with the 3DS.

The PS Vita has just received some life support by Sony's reveal that all PS4 games have to be compatible with remote play; ie: you can play your PS4 through your Vita.

Meanwhile, Gamefly sales and Humble Bundles seem to be pushing Steam ever forward in the eyes of the consumer. If only EA could improve Origin, though...

It would actually make sense for Valve to have more of a presence at E3, though, as Steam is a platform in itself now.

Xbox suxs! Nintendo is for babys! Sony FTW

Never really got this console wars thing TBH, I've stuck with the Xbox 360 because it does everything I want for a games console. Didn't bother with the PS3 as I honestly don't think it's any better, comparable yes, better no.

I would imagine that Nintendo consoles are mainly bought/used by younger gamers, every adult I know who bought a Wii now keeps it stored under 2 inches of dust!

As for the next gen consoles, still think the Xbox One is going to be a flop, to date I haven't met many people who seem at all interested in it. Did know one who pre-ordered it blind and has now cancelled their pre-order following the press release. Don't know much about the PS4 TBH, if it's a reasonable spec (which it will be), sensibly priced and Sony decide not to go down the route Microsoft are rumoured to be doing with second hand games etc. it will probably steal a march on the competition. Personally I'm not bothered about either of them, going to stick with my 360 for the foreseeable.

Look, the thing is this..
Due to "pc gaming" being the sole realm of the geeky, it has gained an aura of mystery. It is, by perception, an arcane science full of complex procedures that require powers beyond the skill set of the mere mortal. Nothing but trouble will come of it...

It's simply not true. Everything is plug and play these days. My last three pc's have been progressively easier to build, simpler to configure and have caused me no issues whatsoever. I am not a "pc god", I simply "dabble".

My current one. I put it together (three quarters of an hour), switched it on, chucked in a disc and left it to run the set up (another hour).
Done. No problems.

And that's building your own. Things will only plug in in one place, in one orientation, like a light bulb. My last pc would even play audio discs without being booted up. Simple.

I could have bought a pc that would play my games, it would have cost me no more, but I wanted to build my own. So I did. Buying would have been simpler, it would have saved me an hour and three quarters. I could have brought it home, plugged it in and played my games. Really simple.

There is no complex procedure.

I'm afraid you are and you've forgotten your 'roots'! You've moved on to the 'simple' solution ... fair enough ;¬)[/i]

Haha. No, I play my PC and even Mac thanks to Steam cross-buy. I own every current format. I have over 200 games on Steam and love the service, but I also love my console games. I have a family PC in the lounge, but not linked to a TV, and a PC for gaming in the study, which can be linked to either monitor or TV, but mostly on the monitor.

However, my PC needs upgrading as the motherboard can handle a slightly better processor but no more memory. Graphics card is ok (Radeon 4600 1GB) but could do with a better one.

So next upgrades will be;
PS4
Or
Xbox One
Or
New PC (or parts, but probably cheaper to get a new PC)

Even buying a ready made PC is like buying Separates but buying them in a single package. You have to have some knowledge of how they all work together, the same way that you still have to have knowledge that buying a PC game will require a certain level of CPU, Graphics Card and OS.
The first part simply is not true. Buying a ready made pc is just like buying a new Blu-ray player or a washing machine or a new hifi, tv, dishwasher, toaster, and to insist it's otherwise is blatantly stretching a point; plugging in a keyboard and mouse is no more complex than connecting a hand controller to an x-box, and connecting to a monitor is no more troublesome than attaching a blu-ray player to your TV.

And, again, the second part relates to my comment of "any decent pc..." blah blah...

"Understanding" the specs is no more complex than reading and comparing.

Do you need to "understand" why your 360 game works with your 360? No. You only need know that it does.

Do I really need to "understand" why my game requiring 3Ghz CPU works with a 3GHz CPU? No. I only need know that it does.
