Wow - what a memory you have! I fear that problem may have reared it's ugly head once again, because I re-installed my soundcard yesterday. I knew it was too good to be true.
...but my scanner developed a dislike of my old external modem and I could not have the two installed on my system at the same time. The modem resulted in the scanner not being detected but as soon as I turned it off and rebooted the scanner magically worked again.
You said something abut having your modem and soundcard working together in an earlier post, maybe it's a modem-scanner-soundcard thing.
Try magic tape!
