Doesn't have to be a whole song, can just be a line or two, whatever speaks to you personally.
Don't worry if anyone laughs or sneers at the band you choose, that's their problem, not yours.
I'll start:
-------
“Can’t Bring me Down” – Suicidal Tendencies
What the hell's going on around here?
First off let's take it from the start
Straight out can't change what's in my heart
No one can tear my beliefs apart,
You ain’t never seen no one like me
Prevail regardless what the cost might be
Power flows inside of me
You can't bring me
Never fall as long as I try
Refuse to be part of your lie
Even if it means I die
You can't bring me down
Who the hell you calling crazy?
You wouldn't know what crazy was if Charles Manson
...was eating Fruit Loops on your front porch
Time out let's get something clear
I speak more truth than you want to hear
Scapegoat to cover up your fear, you can't bring me
You ain’t never seen so much might
Fight for what I know is right
What up you got yourself a fight
You can't bring me
Stand up we'll all sing along
Together ain’t nothin' as strong
Won't quit we ain’t in the wrong
You can't bring me down
Just cause you don't understand what's going on
Don't mean it don't make no sense
And just cause you don't like it,
Don't mean it aint no good
And let me tell you something
Before you go taking a walk in my world,
You better take a look at the real world
Cause this aint no Mr. Rogers Neighborhood
Can you say "feel like sh-t?"
Yea maybe sometimes I do feel like sh-t
I aint happy about it
But I'd rather feel like sh-t
Than be full of sh-t
And if I offended you?
Oh I'm sorry
But maybe you needed to be offended
But here's my apology and one more thing
F--- you
Cause you can't bring me down
"Of all the great
> anti-capatalist lyrics system have, you chose these?"
Yeah I know, but it was what I was listening to at the time.
YOU, Label Me,
Cos my mind is not like yours,
I, Threaten You,
By doing what I adore.
Another stand off, so insignificant,
They call us 'Freaks',
And try to steal away our pride,
But their power comes from acceptance,
That we don't need from their kind.
YOU, Hate Me,
Cos you don't like the way I dress?!?
I, Hate You,
For the abuse I always get.
Another stand off, so insignificant,
The 'trendy @ssholes',
Try to steal away the pride,
But we are strong in our unity,
And they can't take it whatever they try!
No matter what they try!
We'll fight till we die!
Even though I don't know why!
WHY?!?
DO YOU HATE ME?!?
that's all folks... whaddaya think then?
I give you a man against the world"
-Survivor
'Man against the world'
"And we're just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began."
-Survivor
'Ever since the world began'
> Artist: Tool
Song: H
This song deals with major drug
> abuse, the title 'H' stands for something, use your imagination a little he he!!
---
Um, sorry to rain on your parade sir but you're wrong about this song.
It's cool that someone else likes Tool, but it's nothing to do with drugs.
Maynard describes this song as a follow up/continuation to "Prison Sex" which dealt with his abuse as a child from his father.
He has a son called Devo h and it's about his fear that he will repeat the cycle of abuse towards his son, and trying to deal with the side of him that wishes to injure his boy.
"What's coming through is alive", birth of his son
"What's holding up is a mirror", images of himself in son
"But what's singing songs is a snake", refering to himself
"The snake behind me hisses what my damage could have been, my blood before me begs me open up my heart again", reminders of his abuse as a child and the despair at not wanting to continue the cycle onwards to his own flesh and blood.
"And as the walls came down, and as I look in his eyes, my fear begins to fade recalling all of the times, I have died and will die it's alright, I don't mind", realising he doesn't have to repeat the pattern of abuse.
As Prison Sex dealt with sexual abuse from the perspective of the victim, "h" deals with the fear from the other point of view, that of potential abuser.
This is a theme on Aenima, explored further in "Pushit" which again speaks of the despair and fear of repeating abuse cycles towards your own children.
Easy mistake to make though, until I read an interview with him I thought it was a drug thing as well.
But being Tool, there's more to them than you'd think at first.
Would you catch me if I was falling?
Would you kiss me if I was leaving?
Would you hold me if I was lonely?

Rain King
When I think of heaven
Deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathers
And all other instruments of faith and sex and God in the belly of a black-winged bird.
Don't try to feed me
I've been here before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen
I belong anywhere but in between
She's been crying, I've been thinking
And I am the Rain King
And I said mama, mama, mama, why am I so alone?
I can't go outside
I'm scared I might not make it home
I'm alive, I'm alive but I'm sinking in
If there's anyone at home at your place, darling
Why don't you invite me in?
Don't try to bleed me
Cause I've been there before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen
I belong anywhere but in between
She's been lying, I've been sinking
And I am the Rain King
Hey, I only want the same as anyone
Henderson is waiting for the sun
Oh, it seems night endlessly begins and ends
After all the dreaming I come home again...
When I think of heaven
Deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of dying
Lay me down in a field of flame and heather
Render up my body into the burning heart of God in the belly of a black-winged bird
Don't try to bleed me
Cause I've been here before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen
I belong anywhere but in between
She's been dying, I've been drinking
And I am the Rain King
Counting Crows - I Wish I Was A Girl
I'm going down to Hollywood,
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find crawling round my brain,
I wish I was a girl,
So that you could believe me,
And I could shake this static every time I try to sleep,
and I wish for all the world that I could say,
Hey Elizabeth, y'know,
I'm doing alright, these days.
A Long December
A long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast
And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven...I wish you would
The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl
And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California...I think you should
Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her
And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass
And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean...I guess I should
Counting Crows - Perfect Blue Buildings
Just down the street from your hotel, baby
I stay at home with my disease
Aint' this position familiar, darlin'
Well, all monkeys do what they see
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...
Down on Virginia and La Loma,
Where I got friends who'll care for me
You got an attitude of everything I ever wanted
I got an attitude of need
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...
Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby
Try to keep myself away from me
4:30 am on a Tuesday
Doesn't get much worse than this
In beds in little rooms in buildings
in the middle of these lives which are completely meaningless
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...
Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby
Just try to keep myself away from myself and me...
I got bones beneath my skin, and mister
There's a skeleton in every man's house
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody
There's a dead man trying to get out
Please help me stay awake, I'm falling...
Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion baby
Try to keep myself away from myself and me...
August and Everything After (1993)
Omaha
Start tearing the old man down
Run past the heather and down to the old road
Start turning the grain into the ground
Roll a new leaf over
In the middle of the night there's an old man
Treading around in the gathered rain
Hey mister if you want to walk on water
Would you drop a line my way
Omaha
Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you'd better turn your ticket in
And leave your money right at the door
Start threading the needle
Brush past the shuttle that slides through the cold room
Start turning the wool across the wire
Roll the new life over
In the middle of the night there's an old man
Threading his toes through a bucket of rain
Hey mister if you want to walk on water
You're only going to walk all over me
Omaha
Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you'd better turn your ticket in
And leave your money right at the door
Start running the banner down
Drop past the color come up through the summer rain
Start turning the girl into the ground
Roll a new life over
In the middle of the day there's a young man
Rolling around in the earth and rain
Hey mister if you're going to walk on water, you know you're only going to walk all over me
Omaha
Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It's the heart that matters more
I think you'd better turn your ticket in
And leave your money right at the door
