No verdict yesterday but one is expected today:

A sleepless night awaited Mercedes after Thursday's International Tribunal into the 'secret' tyre test ended without resolution and the threat of a race ban for next week's British GP still hanging over the team.

During a compelling day of argument and counter-arguments in Paris, Mercedes were accused by the sport's governing body of breaching the Sporting Regulations by running in the three-day test, held at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalyuna the week after the Spanish GP.

The team's reiteration that they were passive participants because the test was conducted by Pirelli continued to cut no ice with the FIA, with the governing body's QC Mark Howard gleefully thanking Ross Brawn for "giving the game away" following his reluctant admission the team did gain 'knowledge' from the running conducted by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in the team's 2013 charger, the W04.

Although a points deduction weighed down with a financial penalty is still the most likely punishment if Mercedes are found guilty when the Tribunal's ruling is delivered on Friday, the possibility of a race ban still clouds the team ahead of the upcoming British and German GPs - both of which are effectively the Anglo-German outfit's 'home' events.

Asked by Sky Sports News if there was any danger that Mercedes, and therefore star British driver Hamilton, could be forced to sit out next week's British GP, Sky F1's Ted Kravitz replied: "Yes, there is a danger. If the Tribunal finds against Mercedes, both in terms of breaking the sporting regulations and the more serious thing of acting in a way prejudicial to the interests of competition, they have every penalty available to them.

"They could ban Mercedes from the British Grand Prix. That would mean that Lewis Hamilton would not race at Silverstone. That is possible. I don't think that's likely, but it is possible.

"They could give Mercedes a very big fine, I think that potentially is likely if Mercedes are indeed found guilty, or/and indeed they could take away Mercedes' constructors' points. I think that's also quite likely.

"But we will see - anything is possible. Is it likely Lewis Hamilton will get banned for Silverstone? No, I don't think it is. But it is possible."

Speaking after the event, Red Bull boss Christian Horner - who was in attendance throughout the hearing - made clear that a financial penalty would not meet with the approval of the World Champions.

"It's for the Tribunal to decide, it's not for us to comment on what the penalties should be, but normally if you commit a sporting offence then it is a sporting penalty which goes with it," Horner told Sky Sports News. "That's down to the Tribunal, but the problem is that if it is only financial then that only becomes the cost of testing."

It's difficult. All the teams would love the extra testing time and I believe even testing the tyres in the current car helps in some ways but it's not fair on teams that can't afford the cost of extra test time.

In an ideal world the FIA would help with the cost of testing, or perhaps even the tyre company, since it benefits them. Then they can organise a rota of testing for teams to all get a chance.

Interesting day today in F1:

Formula 1 is braced for today's FIA Tribunal in Paris where Mercedes stand accused of breaking strict testing rules with the threat of a heavy fine, a points deduction or even expulsion from this year's championship hanging over the team.

Mercedes provided their 2013 car, along with drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, for Pirelli's use at a private tyre test at the Barcelona circuit after the Spanish Grand Prix and ahead of Monaco.

Article 22.1 of F1's Sporting Regulations states: 'Track testing shall be considered any track running time not part of an Event undertaken by a competitor entered in the Championship, using cars which conform substantially with the current Formula One Technical Regulations in addition to those from the previous or subsequent year.'

Mercedes and Pirelli have, though, insisted they committed no wrongdoing with F1's sole tyre supplier insisting that their commercial agreement with the governing body permits 1000km of testing with any of the teams.

Team boss Ross Brawn is expected to feature as Mercedes' leading witness, with the Brackley-based outfit pledging to explain the " facts in an open and transparent manner".

The Englishman arrived at the FIA's Paris headquarters early this morning but declined to speak to the awaiting media pack.

The appearance of his Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner, however, to take in proceedings was something of a surprise, the World Champions having lodged the original protest into Mercedes' test at the Monaco GP.

A 12-man tribunal will hear the case later today, although a verdict on the saga may be delayed until tomorrow.

"They ran a current car, with current drivers, on a current circuit, during the season and on the face of it, that is expressly forbidden by the Sporting Regulations," reported Sky Sports News' Craig Slater from Paris as the Tribunal convened.

"However, there may be a couple of caveats here as we understand there may have been some sort of communique between Mercedes and the FIA. Certainly Mercedes feel they wouldn't have undertaken this test unless they had some sort of permission."

In recent days, speculation has flourished that Mercedes' defence will rest on an exchange of emails between Brawn and FIA race director Charlie Whiting.

Pirelli, meanwhile, are known to be extremely aggrieved at receiving their summons to attend the hearing.

It is by no means unfeasible that Pirelli - who have yet to sign a deal to continue as F1's tyre supplier in 2014 - will quit the sport if any penalty meted out is considered too severe or damaging for their reputation.

Button thinks Hamilton will get faster but it's interesting to see he's already talking about 2014:

Jenson Button says it is only a matter of time before Lewis Hamilton shows his true speed for his Mercedes team and that it will "shock you all".

Hamilton has struggled for pace more than expected compared to team-mate Nico Rosberg since joining Mercedes this year.

But his former McLaren team-mate Button said: "For Lewis, it is the same as it is for all of us - if he does not have a car balance that suits him, then it is not easy.

"And, of course, Nico is fast. But Lewis has not lost his speed. It is still there. He will come back and then he will shock you all."

Button was talking in an interview with the German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport conducted at the Canadian Grand Prix, the day before Hamilton outqualified Rosberg for the first time in four races.

Button added: "You have to be fair. He has at least scored significantly more points than Nico. Lewis is incredibly fast."

Button was asked whether he thought Mercedes had been helped by the controversial 1,000km tyre test the team did with Pirelli before the Monaco Grand Prix, and for which Mercedes and Pirelli face a hearing of the FIA international tribunal on Thursday.

He said: "Both drivers say no. You have to believe them. Otherwise they would be liars. So I believe them."

Button's McLaren team have had a disappointing year, with a best result of fifth place, but he said it was important to keep trying to develop their current car rather than give up on 2013 and focus on 2014, when F1 will introduce a new engine formula and some revisions to the chassis rules.

"The cars in 2014 are slightly different, but we must first understand the current car to make a step forward in the car for next year," he said. "And also we want to win races this year."

He said he was looking forward to next year's introduction of 1.6-litre V6 turbos with extensive energy recovery, which will replace the current 2.4-litre naturally aspirated V8s.

"2014 will be completely different for all of us," he said. "Already this year, every driver has to learn a whole lot about how a Formula 1 car works and how to take care of the tyres. This is bad for me because I've always worked on such things.

"Next year is again a lot of new things: The new powertrain, the new aerodynamics, such as the Kers (energy recovery) and how the turbo works.

"We get power from three different sources (the engine, the energy recovery and the turbo). The speeds will be unfamiliar.

"It is probably the biggest change we've had in Formula 1. So we have to cope."

They're allowed KERS and DRS at Monaco and have been since it came in.

The race is different because it still has the danger of old Formula 1 and is difficult to drive, so very challenging for the drivers, obviously on top of the most challenging car in racing, with tight corners and that tunnel which goes from light to dark and back to light again so quickly.

There ARE overtakes and there are plenty of crashes or spinouts and although getting on pole is more important than other races due to the tight circuit, there is no guarantee of winning from pole, either.

There's certainly more to an F1 race than a fixation on overtaking, even if we've had far more of that in other races over the last few years.

Remember a few years back some driver (can't remember who it was) saying that they should scrap that race and just run a 2 hour time trial as it's virtually impossible to race there. Although I seem to recall seeing a clip of Nigel Mansell pulling off a mega pass there about 20 years ago, perhaps they should dust him off and wheel him out this Sunday...?

Never really got this ''jewel in the F1 crown'' thing about Monaco, it looks pretty but it's useless as a racetrack. Seen a couple of Indycar races on street courses (Long Beach, Surfers Paradise etc.) in previous years, those guys seem to be able to race. Although I suppose it's going to be difficult to modify the Monaco circuit without knocking down a few billion quids worth of real estate!

Presume they can't use the go faster wings there then? (which would be understandable).

It has been a spectacle in the past, though, with crashes in tunnels and overshooting the corners.

Will have to use one of my NOW TV sports pass vouchers to watch if I'm in during the race, or just watch on BBC after.
