Manchester United are in talks to sign a 20-year-old midfielder, who has been called the new Maradona, the News of the World reports.

The paper says United have offered £14million for River Plate's Andres D'Alessandro.

An Argentine official says: "Talks are progressing."

I just sooooo hope this is true. Love to see this guy at Man Utd. Heard so many good things about him. Along with Saviola he is one of Argentina's great young talents.

Hopefully it isnt just paper talk...

Makes sense though, signing another Argentine player could keep Veron happy, and make him feel more at home.

D'Allessandro has stated he wants to play in the premiership and i think with Veron at United that'll edge them ahead in the buying chase. Unless of course he's big friends with Arca at Sunderland lol

I don't want but to leave! Aside from Wallwork, he's the only back-up we have for Roy Keane when he's injured, in that Defensive-Midfield role I mean!

But I am awaiting Yorke's anticipated departure, and I think it's only a matter of time before he does go! Even if it is at the end of the season. There's no way he'll get a new contract!

As for D'alessandro, I think he'll go to Barcelona, mainly cuz he can earn loads of money and win things with the likes of Saviola and Rivaldo!
I think he would choose Real Madrid, but won't as he sees he cannot get in when Zidane and Figo are there!
For some reason I just don't think he'd prefer Italy to Spain.

Yep D'Alessandro can play up front, be a good signing if Yorke leaves or if Butt leaves.

Yeah, that's true too. Ortega is a great player, and can play in the midfield or upfront, and I think he's now back in Argentina with River Plate, where we don't get to see him play anymore, like we could when he was at Parma.

They said this about Ortega, when he was playing great football but he did not materialise at Old Trafford did he?

I signed D'Allesandrio on last year's Championship Manager and he played wicked for me for ages while I was in charge.

Even though I hate Man Utd, they certainly know how to pick good youngsters.

For the sake of other Premiership clubs, I hope Man Utd don't sign him! What a prospect he is for the future.

I don't think that D'alessandro will definitley make it into Argentina's squad for the World Cup, but he think he should definitley be considered for a place!

He may be overlooked due to his in-experience at the highest inerntional level, and because they already have the likes of Ortega, Riquleme, Gallardo, Veron and more in their squad.

He's gotta be a definite for 2006 though!

Argentina must have so much depth to their squad, I really dont see how England can compete with them in the World Cup.
