What's all the crap I hear about Microsoft trying to monopolise the gaming market. They're "buying all the other companies" and "using their money to get what they want"... aparantly. I beg to differ.

To begin with, let's have a look at the above quotes.

Contrary to popular belief, MS have not bought any big games companies. They bought Bungie- who are so small the MS relocated every single person in the company- and more recently Rare- the tiny midlands developer. No sign of any big publishers yet. And what have they done with these companies? Microsoft allowed Bungie so many resources that Halo has been nominated for "Game of the Year" awards numerous times. Is this a bad thing?

At the same time, MS are throwing money at other publishers for exclusives. Which is exactly what Sony did with the PS1. In both situations the companies gave wods of cash, development tools and premade libraries to third party developers to produce exclusive games. This is how Sony wooed Konami, Square and Namco away from Nintendo.

And this all adds up towards a great thing for gamers. If the Xbox's successor gets nearer to Sony's sales figures then we will once more find ourselves in a console wars where it is the games that determine the outcome, and not company branding. Let's face it, the PS2 had no competition when it came out, and the quality of games was nowhere near as paramount as it had been in, say, the SNES vs Mega Drive days.

So, to those who curse the Xbox, think before you speak. MS have not bought out many companies, made any more third party deals than any other manufacturer (including Sega!), and are certainly not dominating the market. Competition is good.

PsychoticKiller, I do not have an Xbox. Your point was just stupid. Every console has stupidly easy games. GTA3 took me 4 days to complete on the PS2, but MGS2 kept me going for weeks. I could easily say that the N64 was rubbish because I completed most of the games on it in no time. However, that would ignore the quality of Zelda, Goleneye etc...

My question still stands. Everything that er-no says in his post has happened... when Sony entered the market. They paid big developers for exclusives, pumped money into advertising, and bought out the whole industry taking the majority market share.

So why is it alright to have a monopoly in the games market with Sony, but not to have competition between Sony and Microsoft? The situation reminds me of Nintendo back in the old days: They completely controlled the market, with the NES and SNES selling more units in Japan than all the rest of the console put together (and there were about a dozen). Then Sega comes along, poses a challenge in the West, and both companies produce some of the best games of all time.

Most of the comments here are aimed at Microsoft's poor treatment of the PC market. However, when you look to see what MS have done with the Xbox, you'll see it's a quality console... just like what Sony did with the PS1.

So tell me... what is different about what MS are doing now and what Sony did with the PS1?

Everytime I read an article about Microsoft in the FT, or one that my dad demands I read. I seem to find myself reading about how they are about to buy a company, normally a company with a bright/clever idea.

We will see this idea in a couple of years and Microsoft will claim it all to be theirs. Just like Bill Gates originally claimed that MSDOS was originally all his. Where as you will find it was a project of a few people that he took all credit for. Microsoft aren't about teamwork or actually trying to give us anywhere near the best. They are about trying to create themselve a word that is all Microsoft run.

If Gates or Murdoch had their way. We would be breathing and paying for it.

And don't give me no good crap about him donating money or Microsoft donating money. They have to as is part of the regulation in America.

Microsoft promised revolotionary gaming, they didn't deliver, Sony didn't promise much as the PS1 was originally an idea set as an add-on for the SNES. Revolotionary? - all I can see are games that are either PC ports/PS2 ports or in the case of Halo, an original Mac game.

Oh how very revoltionary. At least the PS1 (which I also kick into dirt) introduced to us the CD based games and era. It also stayed in the market long enough for enough people to be satisfied with the console in terms of original games, something Microsoft cannot and won't do.

To your question? What have MS done with the XBox that Sony didn't do with the PS1? Well, Microsoft have dropped the price of the XBox to quote more, 'more times than a male drops his balls'. The reason was because they could afford it and needed to buff their sales because to be frank, they were crap.

'Hi!'

'Go away Frank'

'Ok!'

Where as Microsoft said, 'We give thanks to all the people who have brought the XBox to date, we are making this price drop as to ...blah blah blah'.

God they talk crap, and make crap, and release crap.
