You would only need to do it once.
Once you get the hang of the game, it doesn't take too much effort to wipe out entire factions. It just takes time. But it is fantastic fun, oh yes.

I wouldn't own one without the other.
Even though Medieval is a vast improvement, the setting and different style of Shogun makes it an essentail purchase.
