Of course, he has already brought in the goods, and has seen his side beat Man United TWICE at Old Trafford!
How do you define 'A Good Manager'??? Think about that while you read on...
Do you remember these players from their times at Anfield under Houllier's reign:
Paul Ince - A firey defensive-midfielder who has peviously had spells with Man United and Inter Milan. So he must have been worth the money for Liverpool! But not necessarily in Gerard Houllier's eyes... Ince was Liverpool's first-chhoice captain for a while, but then it all started to go wrong. For some reason (maybe due to a bust-up with the manager) Ince found himself 'left to rot in the reserves'. The former England captain also found that he was banned from training with the first-team, and trained with other first-team rejects, including Sean Dundee!
Where is he know?? Holding an under-performing Middlesbrough side together under new boss Steve McLaren.
So, he's gone to a club after success, to a club that could be facing a relagation battle!
Sean Dundee - He was once a promising young South African striker with a dream of playing a Germany. But then he moved to Liverpool. He thought that being at a big club like Liverpool would help him get recognition from German Head Coach Berti Vogts, but he was wrong! He recieved the same treatment as Ince, but with much less games, with an early start. I think that the only 2 games he played in were Worthington Cup matches, and that was after coming on as a sub. So he was never given the chances he needed to show what he can do!
Now, after completing a move to German side VFB Stuttgart a few years ago, Dundee has recieved his one and only international cap, and is playing more regularly closer to his dreams. If he keeps on playing well i'm sure he'll make it. After all, Bierhoff and co. can't play forever!
Sander Westerveld - The sale pf Westerveld was, at the time, possibly Houllier's biggest mistake as Liverpool manager. Sander WAS a top Dutchman, edging closer each game to replacing van der Sar for Holland. After a successfull first season at the club, he must have thought that nothing could go wrong, but it did! Houllier dropped and transfer-listed him after one error led to a Bolton winner, earlier in the season! In my view, that's a bad choice!
Yes, he made a blooper, but that was the one and only time! Fabien Barthez has made many this season, but Fergie and co. have still stuck by him, and look how important he is to us! Thanks to Houllier, Westerveld may not be playin for Holland for quite some time yet!
Sander Westerveld can now be found playing in the Primera Liga for Spanish no-hopers Real Sociedad. Is there any hope left for Westerveld??
Robbie Fowler - Looking at his goal-scoring record, what he's done for the club, and how well he's worked with Owen, even as an Everton fan, the sale of Robbie Fowler has to be Gerard Houllier's biggest mistke!! Ok, so Phil Thmopson was incharge, and he didn't get on well woth Fowler, but as manager, surely Houlleir could've stepped in and said 'He's staying!' from his hospital bed!! Any other manager must have thought he'd gone to a mental home after letting Fowler go, and I bet David O'Leary couldn't believe his luck! Juts look at what he's done for Leeds already this season, £11m seems like a real bargin!!
Maybe Fowler needed a change to get back to his best, or maybe he just wanted to get away from Thompson, but the fact is that no manager would seriously consider selling a top striker like Robbie Fowler!!
So, now you've had the time to think, how would you define 'A Good Manager'??
I think one thing a good manager must be able to do is get on well with all of the other team and staff members. And to me, this is simply one thing Houlier cannot do. He also caused problems during his time incharge of France when he was brave enough to drop David Ginola from the French squad altogether!
So is he really as good a manager as Liverpool fans make him out to be, or do they need to look closer into his past to discover the truth???
If there is anything I have learned over the past year, it is "Always Trust Houllier"; he is a one of the best in the world, and has proved it again and again with his knowledge of the beautiful game.
Get well soon Gerrard, because we want to see you lift the cup when we win the league in May
So, in a way, he isn't a brilliant manager, 100%!!
Sean Dundee: Personally, I don't rate him. And Gerard obviously gives people chances-just look at Danny Murphy!
Westerveld: I was disappointed to see him ago, but my bet is that we will see him at Euro 2004, even if he is at Sociedad.
Fowler: Now, I loved Robbie while he was at Liverpool. However, with the arrival of Owen and Heskey he couldn't keep it up, and instead of keeping his composure and just playing well, he seemed to panic and lose it all together. In my view he became jealous, and then got himself into arguments with staff members. He lost all confidence, and was of no use to use anymore.
He then moved to Leeds, where last week Liverpool thrashed them 0-4.
Gerard Houllier brought 5 trophies to Anfiled, including the FA and UEFA Cup. We've beaten Man Utd 5 times in a row, and are pushing for the League this year, even when all he can do is talk to Phil Thompson. These facts alone make him a brilliant manager.
