We all know who Gerard Houllier is, and know how he brought those 3 back to Anfield with him last season. But is he really as great a manager as Liverpool fans seem to make out??? Well, obviously not right now as he's still recovering from a serious heart problem.

Of course, he has already brought in the goods, and has seen his side beat Man United TWICE at Old Trafford!
How do you define 'A Good Manager'??? Think about that while you read on...

Do you remember these players from their times at Anfield under Houllier's reign:

Paul Ince - A firey defensive-midfielder who has peviously had spells with Man United and Inter Milan. So he must have been worth the money for Liverpool! But not necessarily in Gerard Houllier's eyes... Ince was Liverpool's first-chhoice captain for a while, but then it all started to go wrong. For some reason (maybe due to a bust-up with the manager) Ince found himself 'left to rot in the reserves'. The former England captain also found that he was banned from training with the first-team, and trained with other first-team rejects, including Sean Dundee!
Where is he know?? Holding an under-performing Middlesbrough side together under new boss Steve McLaren.
So, he's gone to a club after success, to a club that could be facing a relagation battle!

Sean Dundee - He was once a promising young South African striker with a dream of playing a Germany. But then he moved to Liverpool. He thought that being at a big club like Liverpool would help him get recognition from German Head Coach Berti Vogts, but he was wrong! He recieved the same treatment as Ince, but with much less games, with an early start. I think that the only 2 games he played in were Worthington Cup matches, and that was after coming on as a sub. So he was never given the chances he needed to show what he can do!
Now, after completing a move to German side VFB Stuttgart a few years ago, Dundee has recieved his one and only international cap, and is playing more regularly closer to his dreams. If he keeps on playing well i'm sure he'll make it. After all, Bierhoff and co. can't play forever!

Sander Westerveld - The sale pf Westerveld was, at the time, possibly Houllier's biggest mistake as Liverpool manager. Sander WAS a top Dutchman, edging closer each game to replacing van der Sar for Holland. After a successfull first season at the club, he must have thought that nothing could go wrong, but it did! Houllier dropped and transfer-listed him after one error led to a Bolton winner, earlier in the season! In my view, that's a bad choice!
Yes, he made a blooper, but that was the one and only time! Fabien Barthez has made many this season, but Fergie and co. have still stuck by him, and look how important he is to us! Thanks to Houllier, Westerveld may not be playin for Holland for quite some time yet!
Sander Westerveld can now be found playing in the Primera Liga for Spanish no-hopers Real Sociedad. Is there any hope left for Westerveld??

Robbie Fowler - Looking at his goal-scoring record, what he's done for the club, and how well he's worked with Owen, even as an Everton fan, the sale of Robbie Fowler has to be Gerard Houllier's biggest mistke!! Ok, so Phil Thmopson was incharge, and he didn't get on well woth Fowler, but as manager, surely Houlleir could've stepped in and said 'He's staying!' from his hospital bed!! Any other manager must have thought he'd gone to a mental home after letting Fowler go, and I bet David O'Leary couldn't believe his luck! Juts look at what he's done for Leeds already this season, £11m seems like a real bargin!!
Maybe Fowler needed a change to get back to his best, or maybe he just wanted to get away from Thompson, but the fact is that no manager would seriously consider selling a top striker like Robbie Fowler!!

So, now you've had the time to think, how would you define 'A Good Manager'??
I think one thing a good manager must be able to do is get on well with all of the other team and staff members. And to me, this is simply one thing Houlier cannot do. He also caused problems during his time incharge of France when he was brave enough to drop David Ginola from the French squad altogether!

So is he really as good a manager as Liverpool fans make him out to be, or do they need to look closer into his past to discover the truth???

Oh yeah, HENCHOZ'S A CHEAT!!!
And I agree with some of that other stuff, how some cups are quite pointless, and not really challenging.
But i'm not sure about Houllier not admitting to mistakes, as i've havent heard him for a while!

And why is everyone so sure that Dudek's better than Westerveld???

I am not some anti liverpool bloke but lets face it liverpools remarkable season wasn't really tthat remarkable in sense of acheivement, more in the sense of luck.

Firstly lets discount the super cup and charity shield as they are jokes.

right the uefa cup was totally deserved and liverpool have my respect for that. Well played

Fa cup : The biggest joke ever should have been about 5-0 to arsenall and would have been if stefan Henchoz hadn't of cheated. Liverpool were extremely lucky then and in earlier stages.

League cup: Liverpool where useless and birmingham should have won.

Last season was a complete fluke which will be shown up by them winning nothing this season.

They are not a bad team but have some complete jokers in their squad....Heskey,Henchoz,westerveld (left now) and the injury squad.

They have little squad depth except in midfield where they have some good less used players like Berger and smicer.

Riise was a good signing and has been good all season. They've sorted out the keeper crisis with two excellent replace ments. Owen is obviously world class. Heskey is still useless wheter or not he has got several goals in some absolute thrashing. Abel Xavier was a very good buy as he will offer some strength and stability to the squad.
If they can get wayne bridge he will add strength to the defence. selling fowler was s hoicking as he should be owens england partner as well as club.

The worst thing about liverpool however is their manager gerard houllier. He just doesn't know what he's doing. He can't ever accept that he's made a mistake or if somethings wrong. Liverpool are a club with masses of potential whic h is going to waste because a few areas are under strength and mismanaged.

I realise this is probably quite contraversial but its how i feel liverpool are under acheiving as a club even if this is not reflected in the "success of last season.

Ali is right, you only have to look at the current teams situation to see how well Houlliers decisions have paid off.

Ince was useless, Sean Dundee was rubbish and we replaced Westerveld with Dudek, who's even better. And as for Fowler..... okay, fair point. But who needs him now, eh?

Hehehe. I must admit that I felt sorry for Gregory, he was forced out by Ellis and his cronies, we all know it, even if he says otherwise

I also agree that Greogory wasn't bad, and that he only falied due to a lack of funds and support from Doug Ellis. ELLIS OUT!! ELLIS OUT!!

I don't think that John Gregory was that bad a manager. When you consider that he wasn't given money to strenghten the squad when they were top of the league, or throughout the season for that matter, then he did ok to keep Villa were they are

What about Stuart Gray?? He didn't do a very good job in a very short space of time a Southampton did he. I also cannot believe he was a candidate for the Villa job, apparently!!

The same applies to that Chris Hutchings was it?? You know, the bloke who took the Bradford job last season and got sacked about 2 months later.

So these 2 should defintiley be added to the list!
