Metal Gear Solid 2:
Wandered around a ship. This game takes itself WAY too seriously at times. It was fun, but I had to skip all of the text that kept popping up, I wasn't interested in reading it!
Anyway, it looked great, and was enjoyable, but seriously needed a dose of humour.
Rez:
Didn't play this for very long at all. Graphicsa aren't important here, the game was fun. Pretty basic to begin with, but as the pace starts to pick up, it's great fun. I loved the way the music/sound was used. Would have liked to play for longer.
Parappa the Rapper 2:
This game made me laugh so hard, I couldn't play it. A simple concept, just pressing the buttons in time. Begins simply, just one button to press, then you have to press 6 or so in time. My only concern would be the longevity of the game. It was fun, and made me laugh. Well worth a rent!
I played a demo of SSX, loved it and bought the full game.
IF you enjoy the demo, and the full game is just more of the same, then it stands to reason that you'll like the full game, capiche?
Maybe it's just me though. I hate long games. FF games are boring and too long. I never play on game for more than about an hour at a time, if that.
I want a game I can play for a bit, get some enjoyment out of and then put down. Then come back to it and play for 10 mins before I go out, type of thing.
Even GTA3, which is a fantastic game, I can't play for very long. I have a go, do a mission or two, then wander about for a bit killing coppers, then either turn it off or play something else.
Apart from that, you are spot on, most games are demo friendly, and demo only, or demophobic and great games. I nearly gave GTA3 as an example, but realised that wouldn`t work as to make the city, you`d need like a third of the game anyway. Anyone ever played GTA3 demo, I doubt it!
Silent Hill 2. A game that clearly requires some depth of play. I played the demo and thought, hmmm.... this a bit pants, I think I'll burn this disc and then throw it at my cat*
Then I "accidentally" bought the full game in a fit of indecisiveness the words "Silent Hill 2 rocks!" sprung to mind and the purchase was made (I think they were Goatboy's words actually).
After an initial whoops what did I just buy? thought as I wandered uneventfully through fog on a country road, the game turned out to be one of the best games I've ever experienced.
Its reet sary, 'fact I neerly cacked me sen at one point!
But had I gone purely on the demo experience and not the insane ramblings of text based goat, I would have missed out.
Conclusion: Demo's suck. Unlike rocks.
Strength in depth, perhaps, rather than immediate thrills that don't last?
> Just realised I left an 'S' out of the title. D'oh!
To be honest, I thought you meant a demo that had been packaged with the PS2 magazine, P2. Either way, don`t worry about it.
>circle (left?) and square (right?)
Other way round :-)
> the man say 'getting worse'
> and me start to laugh, and can't press no more buttons.
I know what you mean, even the rolling demo was quite amusing.
>Played the demo of Rez again, and finished it. It's fun, >but surely it won't last long?
I think that was one of its main criticisms. Great fun to play, but it won`t last a huge amount of time. I`m not sure if that was down to the length of the game, or the replayability, or both, but it seems the norm with a lot of modern games.
>I couldn't be bothered to play Metal Gear Solid 2
>again.
Two games, both considered brilliant titles... and I almost did the same as you.
MGS1 - Played it a bit, didn`t like it... put it down for about 4 months. After that, somebody said I should go back and do it, even if I didn`t like it, saying that it would get better. I did, and after a little bit of time spent playing it, things fell into place, and it became one of my favourite games of all time. The demo of MGS2 took this to another level simply because there was so much I could do other than just finish the demo... annoy guards, hide in lockers, find posters, etc... Its a game that needs time to unlock its incredible gameplay.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 - Same type of thing again really, though this time I didn`t put it down for months. At first I thought it was rubbish. I couldn`t do anything. All I did was jump in the air, do a quick kickflip and land again, usually sideways causing me to fall over. After a few hours solid play however, you begin to understand the game better and as PSM2 say, if you start to love the game, it`ll love you back. Keep up the hours of play, and before long it is one of the most addictive experiences around, you won`t be able to put it down for anything.
My point, which I`ve realised I should be getting to by now, is that the demos won`t let you see how potentially shallow a game could be, or instead what an amazingly deep experience you could be missing. Parrapa and Rez are fine for short term fun, but they don`t have anywhere near the depth of MGS2 and THPS3 and as a result I feel they are less good games once you get to know them.
