I have been a PS2 gamer for a while now...[snip]

When looking through magazines and playing both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Metal gear Solid 2 (I have both an NTSC PS2 and a PAL one) I have noticed both are filled with gore and sick moments. I also know that Metal Gear 2 was released with a 15+ rating, opposed to GTA's 18+.

I think that the content in Metal Gear 2 is much worse than that of GTA3. Grand Theft Auto is cartoon violence, and although it is sickly dark in humour, it is not realistic-looking, therefore it won't encourage people to do the acts portrayed within the gameplay.

I read an article in a magazine about Metal Gear Solid 2 listing the various ways of torturing the enemy soldiers. Holding guns to their heads, then trying to suffocate them by shooting a hole in a pipe. Shooting one arm, then strangling them and seeing how long they could live, the list went on. The closest to torture in GTA was a hold-up, and even then the police tried to step in.

GTA3 does feature explicit violence, and encourages shooting the police. But in Metal gear, if you shoot a man in the crown jewels, then hide him in a locker and explode it, no-one from the good-side comes to intervine. GTA3 teaches that you can't get away with just murdering innocent live 1 by 1, as once the police are onto you it's hard to stay alive for much longer.

Another offensive part of the GTA3 game were the 'ladies of the night'. This involved them getting in your car, taking them to a dark alley and watching in delight as the car rocked about. But having sex in a car that is rocking is the kind of humour you'd be able to view in a 12+ video of Friends. Metal Gear includes full porno magazines, which can be zoomed into. To purchase Porn, you have to be above 18. So a 15 game is going to get away with 18 rated material, whilst another game is getting an 18 for 12 rated comedy.

I know that the Mafia, and indeed all crime is a sinister topic to cover. But when was the last time you saw reports of the Mafia upsetting millions on the news? Metal gear is based on terrorism, and seeing only 5 months back there was a massive terrorist attack, the Metal gear side seems a little more risky. And I know Metal gear is against terrorism, but for some it is a reminder that they don't want to know about.

I know many people will argue that disobeying the law, paying for 'your needs' and terrorising pedestrians with flamethrowers is worse, but it is cartoony dark humour. metal gear is a realistic game, and it encourages torturing soldiers, and quite literally having fun with their lives.

I hope some of you agree.
