I have been a PS2 gamer for a while now...[snip]

When looking through magazines and playing both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Metal gear Solid 2 (I have both an NTSC PS2 and a PAL one) I have noticed both are filled with gore and sick moments. I also know that Metal Gear 2 was released with a 15+ rating, opposed to GTA's 18+.

I think that the content in Metal Gear 2 is much worse than that of GTA3. Grand Theft Auto is cartoon violence, and although it is sickly dark in humour, it is not realistic-looking, therefore it won't encourage people to do the acts portrayed within the gameplay.

I read an article in a magazine about Metal Gear Solid 2 listing the various ways of torturing the enemy soldiers. Holding guns to their heads, then trying to suffocate them by shooting a hole in a pipe. Shooting one arm, then strangling them and seeing how long they could live, the list went on. The closest to torture in GTA was a hold-up, and even then the police tried to step in.

GTA3 does feature explicit violence, and encourages shooting the police. But in Metal gear, if you shoot a man in the crown jewels, then hide him in a locker and explode it, no-one from the good-side comes to intervine. GTA3 teaches that you can't get away with just murdering innocent live 1 by 1, as once the police are onto you it's hard to stay alive for much longer.

Another offensive part of the GTA3 game were the 'ladies of the night'. This involved them getting in your car, taking them to a dark alley and watching in delight as the car rocked about. But having sex in a car that is rocking is the kind of humour you'd be able to view in a 12+ video of Friends. Metal Gear includes full porno magazines, which can be zoomed into. To purchase Porn, you have to be above 18. So a 15 game is going to get away with 18 rated material, whilst another game is getting an 18 for 12 rated comedy.

I know that the Mafia, and indeed all crime is a sinister topic to cover. But when was the last time you saw reports of the Mafia upsetting millions on the news? Metal gear is based on terrorism, and seeing only 5 months back there was a massive terrorist attack, the Metal gear side seems a little more risky. And I know Metal gear is against terrorism, but for some it is a reminder that they don't want to know about.

I know many people will argue that disobeying the law, paying for 'your needs' and terrorising pedestrians with flamethrowers is worse, but it is cartoony dark humour. metal gear is a realistic game, and it encourages torturing soldiers, and quite literally having fun with their lives.

I hope some of you agree.

I thought the pictures included in MGS2 were that of FHM standard, which is a publication that 15 year olds have access to. Provokative pictures of clothed ladies, mightn't kepp "it" in the pants of thirteen year olds, but I feel 15 year olds can handle it.

Or am I wrong? Perhaps there's full frontal nudity in the game? I don't know, I've only played the demo and read articles.

Sorry, haven't been on a while. Maybe my tagline should be 'I'm a gimp' as punishment... I dunno, but Pornographic material in Metal Gear was the main focus of the 'light' 15 rating.

In Metal Gear Solid 2 you play a character trying to stop terrorists - therefore anything goes. Nothing in the game forces you to torture the soldiers or anything, in fact you get a higher rating for not going on a killing spree. Though it is fun to use the AR2V2 codes to get the extra weapons in the demo and go on a full on firefight game :) The FAS is pretty good.

Grand Theft Auto 3, you play character involved in crime and are rewarded for killing\injuring innocent people and the police.

I think, like others have shown, the difference is pretty clear !

You took too long.

Tarrant, have you noticed that people who have capital letters as the last letter of their name are usually gimps, remember BradW?

I have to agree with Tarrant. Your topic does, indeed, have some fairly weak points.

The graphics have already been covered by Tarrant, so I'll move on to one of the other pathetic strings of text that you claim to be an argument.

So? They are the bad guys. You can kill them how you want. Have you never seen afilm like Die Hard, or Lethal Weapon or any other big blockbuster?

The bad guys ALWAYS die in horrible ways. Yet they are bad guys, so it doesn't matter. The good guy is just and has rightousness on his side. Truth WILL triumph. And all that a**e.

In GTA3 it doesn't work like that. You are a bad guy, and you can do whatever you want. This is BAD and so it's been given an 18 rating.

In MGS2 the player is vengeful and MORALLY CORRECT, so that makes it all ok.

As for the porn, who cares? Anyone who's old enough to log onto the internet can find as much porn as they want.

All your points are farely weak, but I'll just look at a couple.

Firstly, you say that because MGS2 is realistic graphically, it may cause people to go and snap some necks, whereas GTA3 is cartoony, so people won't get any ideas.

So cartoons don't affect people but live action films do? Thats what you seem to be saying. I'm sure you'll agree that thats a load of poo. Anyone dumb enough to want to enact what they've seen in a video game that revolves around killing people, isn't going to make graphical distinctions.

"Ooh, MGS2 looks real nice, I'll go and snap my neighbour's neck and hide him in a wheely bin, oh but GTA3 is quite cartoony so I'll avoid setting the postman on fire"

Hmm.... just doesn't quite sound right does it.

Also, you are depicted as the bold one man army action hero in MGS2. You kill or put to sleep (ooh, sickening) all the "terrorists" in the game. Its no worse than any action film, ooh it contains a fabulous "head pop" moment, oh but so does "Scanners", shall we condemn that film as well? Surely that could make people want to pop heads, infact it looks more real than MGS2 so its clearly going to have more of an affect (Duh?).

GTA3 allows you to grab an old lady from a vehicle beat her to death with a bat and, providing the piggies are round the corner, go about your day. This isn't quite the same as putting terrorists, known killers, to sleep.

Play your games, enjoy them too. If you don't enjoy, then don't play - but for gods sake quit whinging.
