What £1?
Three men go and stay in a hotel (don't ask why) and are told by the receptionist that the room would cost £30. Each man pays £10 and goes upstairs. However, the receptionist realises the room should have only been £25, and sends the porter upstairs with the erroneous £5. THe porter realises that £5 doesn't go three ways, so he gives each man a £1 each and pockets the £2 left over.
So, if each man ends up paying £9 each (£10 originally, plus £1 in return) and the porter pockets £2, why does that only add up to £29? 3 x £9 = £27 + £2 = £29? You figure it out.
