RELEASE OF LINUX KIT (for PlayStation 2)
FOR LINUX COMMUNITY IN EUROPE
London, January 30, 2002 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) will release the Linux Kit (for PlayStationâ2) in May 2002, targeted towards the Linux community in Europe.
Since the launch of PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment has received numerous requests from members of the Linux community to enable Linux programs to run on PlayStation 2. In response to these requests, the Linux Beta Version Kit was made available to approximately 7,900 enthusiasts in Japan in July 2001. Worldwide requests for the Linux kit to be made available outside Japan have continued, and over 9,000 Linux users responded to an SCEE online questionnaire, saying that they would buy the kit if it were available. In response to this movement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will now release Linux (for PlayStation2) to support the Linux user community across the PAL territories.
The Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) comprises an internal 40 Gb Hard Disk Drive, a high-speed Network Adapter (100 BASE-T Ethernet), two Linux installment discs (DVD-ROM), and a Monitor Cable Adaptor, with audio connectors, for display on computer monitors. A high-resolution computer display is assumed as the graphics output; standard output being XGA (1024 x 768 dots). With this kit, users can not only run the wide variety of computer applications written for the Linux operating system, but can also create original programs and applications designed to run on Linux (for PlayStation 2).
More details on the product, together with community based features, images and information on where to source the Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) will be released on SCEE’s technology site (http://www.technology.scee.net) as soon as they become available.
I'm studying a computer games tech degree up here in Scotland, and this will sit nicely along with my Net Yaroze modules etc. next year. I'll be doing my C++ and all that Jazz too, so as well as picking up on how to actually use Linuz properly, I'll be learning it on a console platform rather than the standard PC set-up. How far this system will actually allow the users to develop software and/or code is unknown as of yet, but I'm sure it wont be a bad thing for anyone interested in entering the industry to have some examples of independent work to add to a folio of pieces.
> Hmmmm. Anyone remember Yaroze... What happened to that then?
It's still about, I found a 2nd hand one the other day... but the PS2Linux is a little special... not only for development, but for the price of a XGA Monitor and the £150 for the kit you have your self a very powerful Linux based PC!!...
> That is so effing groovy...
>Tyla, if you want to learn Linux I suggest you get on IRC from 8th Feb - 17th Feb and we'll have a little discussion :)
I take it that's your half term then!;-) No probs as long as they havent installed "WebSense" here by then...(Long and scarry story!)

Roll on May!!... £150 for the kit beats £1000+ for a PC!:-)
