Official Press Release:
RELEASE OF LINUX KIT (for PlayStation 2)
FOR LINUX COMMUNITY IN EUROPE
London, January 30, 2002 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) will release the Linux Kit (for PlayStationâ2) in May 2002, targeted towards the Linux community in Europe.
Since the launch of PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment has received numerous requests from members of the Linux community to enable Linux programs to run on PlayStation 2. In response to these requests, the Linux Beta Version Kit was made available to approximately 7,900 enthusiasts in Japan in July 2001. Worldwide requests for the Linux kit to be made available outside Japan have continued, and over 9,000 Linux users responded to an SCEE online questionnaire, saying that they would buy the kit if it were available. In response to this movement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will now release Linux (for PlayStation2) to support the Linux user community across the PAL territories.
The Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) comprises an internal 40 Gb Hard Disk Drive, a high-speed Network Adapter (100 BASE-T Ethernet), two Linux installment discs (DVD-ROM), and a Monitor Cable Adaptor, with audio connectors, for display on computer monitors. A high-resolution computer display is assumed as the graphics output; standard output being XGA (1024 x 768 dots). With this kit, users can not only run the wide variety of computer applications written for the Linux operating system, but can also create original programs and applications designed to run on Linux (for PlayStation 2).
More details on the product, together with community based features, images and information on where to source the Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) will be released on SCEE’s technology site (http://www.technology.scee.net) as soon as they become available.
Linux supports everything, just about. I'm realised that nothing is as complicated as manufacturers make out, and hardly anything really needs the driver discs.
I've already found Bonus (Bruce) in there:-)

> That's technically GNOME running on X-Windows. Also, that keyboard's ugly. I'll just have to make do with this wireless one and wireless optical mouse. Muahaha...
Oh.. dodgy IR mouse and keyboard... Does linux support Graphics Tablets?... If so, that's my problem solved!;-)

Guess what my next student loan cheque is getting spent on ;)
> How far this system will actually allow the users to develop software and/or code is unknown as of yet,
As far as I have read and some people I have spoken too, this thing will allow you to do anything, if it will run in Linux, you can use it... As for games development, look at Showdow of memories by Konami, all coded in Linux from start to finish...
Sony have potentially released a seriously powerful tool onto the market... Ametures like my self will probably only use it as a learning tool, but seasoned *nix'ers will produce some awesome results... youhave the most powerful sytem arcitecture in the world running Linux... Weep it Microsoft!:-)
