The Gamecube launch information was generally good news, the price was brilliant a mere £150 (and I thought my prediction was low of £160). The titles on offer from Day one of the Gamecube’s life include 20 games! These are as follows:
Wave Race: Blue Storm, Star Wars Rogue Leader Rogue Squadron II, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Super Monkey Ball, ISS2, ESPN Winter Sports, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, Spiderman, Tarzan Untamed, Batman Vengeance, Donald Duck Quack Attack, Crazy Taxi, Burnout, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, NHL Hitz, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Universal Studios, Batman, Tetris World,
2002 FIFA World Cup,
A mere 3 weeks later see’s the release of two AAA titles, Resident Evil from Capcom (and unlike the Japanese we don’t have to wait 9 months) and Super Smash Brothers Melee from HAL.
But one piece of launch information that wasn’t so brilliant was the Gamecube release date. True May 3rd isn’t September but it isn’t early March either and for a Nintendo fan the thought of waiting 3 more months is not impossible but so damn hard. But that’s not the point; the Gamecube arrives towards the end of spring and has missed the most important opportunities such as the Easter market and Christmas.
This was a point raised with a conversation with Sonic Rav, he pointed out the Gamecube has appeared in Europe to late, that it should of reached the Christmas market and that the Gamecube should of tried to beat the X-box by appearing before it. But no? Was this date so late in an attempt to supply enough Gamecube’s to the European market? Remember the rumored 300,000 reports? That has jumped to 500,000 launch day, (One million in the launch period). Was it just a rumor or was the Gamecube delayed in order to supply enough consoles?
I doubt it in fact some might say the Gamecube has chosen an ideal time to appear. Lets take a closer look at the launch titles, in particular the launch titles that will appeal to the casual gamer. The World cup is round the corner; England under its new and highly improved management (Good old Sven) has a very promising outlook. So expect World Cup merchandise to sell like hot cakes and by looking at the launch titles I seem to spot FIFA 2002 Road to World Cup. This as a Gamecube launch title, and with the Gamecube launch situated very near to kick off for the World Cup, is a very clever ploy for the Big N as the FIFA game may and probably will sell a few Gamecube’s.
The movie that is set to beat Ali and James Bond 20 this year is none other than George Lucas’s Star Wars Episode: II Attack of the Clones. Again the Film has a UK launch near the launch of Nintendo’s Gamecube, and hang on what is that in the launch line up? Why isn’t it a Star Wars title, and exclusive one at that! Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader may concentrate on the original Star Wars Trilogy rather than Episode 1 or 2 but this will undoubtedly sell a bucket load of Gamecube’s. The launch of the second movie will mean all the Star Wars nuts (and that’s a hell of a lot of people) will be in the element and the sight of what is one of the best Star Wars game ever might cause many of them to snap up a copy as well.
Resident Evil has a UK launch of May 24th (and we are still waiting for an American release date); May 24th is also very near the release of the Resident Evil movie. And the opportunity to play the first ever Resident Evil title (that also looks like a movie) will be a very attractive prospect to movie goers. So is this a cunning ploy from the Big N? Of course it is, the opportunity to cash in on three European events and films is an opportunity not to be missed and two of the three happen to be exclusive to the Gamecube (Resident Evil and Star Wars).
Another thing about the European launch is the high possibility of a Gamecube – Gameboy Advance link-up from day one. Sonic Advance would have already been released and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is also a Gamecube launch title and of course the two link together. The GBA’s life will feature many new and excellent titles in the coming months, Super Mario Advance 2, the return of Super Mario World, the world’s greatest game will be released and the GBA’s sales will rocket. The launch of a brand new 2D Sonic Adventure will do the same and those who have played the Sonic and Mario game and loved it (which judging on the praise they are both enjoying will be a hell of a lot of people) will know that 3D updates of them both are only avalible on the Gamecube. The Sonic link-up will also attract GBA owners to the Gamecube.
So after reading that do you believe the Gamecube’s date is too late? Or do you believe the GBA’s new titles, the Resident Evil game coinciding with the movie, as does the Star Wars one. Make the Gamecube’s release a well-timed one? Expect the Sonic GBA to Gamecube link up, The Resident Evil game, the Star Wars title and FIFA, road to world cup to be advertised fully as we approach the Gamecube’s release and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rogue Leader shown prior to the Star Wars film nor would I be shocked to see Resident Evil before the film of the same name. I believe Nintendo have placed the Gamecube release at the right time so it can cash in.

If you mean Sonic Adventure, I would STRONGLY advise against buying it.
Whereas Sonic Adventure 1 was a huge game- 6 characters, each with their own stories that interlinked that could keep you going for hours- the sequal is far shorter, taking me only 2 days to do the 2 main quests, and then a couple of days to do the secret one.
The levels in the first one are extremely fast and very fun. In the sequal the levels are boring for knuckles and Rouge (run around and find some stupid diamonds), and eggman and tail's levels are also a bit lackluster. Even Sonic's levels are far shorter, and slower.
Finally, whereas the first game was just amazingly impressive- great FMV and real time cut scenes, lots to keep you busy and plenty of challenges, and the best range of bosses ever seen in a Sonic game (over a dozen in total)... oh and very VERY fast levels for Sonic- the sequal is far less impressive. It's short; it has very few bosses; very few extra game to keep you busy like getting the medals in the original.
The game really doesn't impress me, and is possibly the weakest in the whole Sonic series. You'd be better off buying the GBA Sonic game (which, contrary to what I have said is actually NOT the same as the NGCP game!).

Iam a PS2 owner, but dont see the X-Box or the GC as one up over the PS2. I think that the X-Box is probably the best in performance, with the GC and PS2 pretty equal. In fact all 3 consoles are pretty much equal in performance.
I have a X-Box on order as it has games that I want to play. I want a GC in the summer so I can play Resident Evil and a few of the other GC games.
